בקשתי להיות שלוחי-מצוה למסור צדקה שלי וקשרו זה בענין של תורה, והוסיפו צדקה משלהם.
ואף על פי שבכל ענין של מצוה שיהודי עושה, אין מקום לתודה על זה מבשר ודם, שהרי עצם קיום המצוה ומילוי רצון השם יתברך הוא השכר והאושר האמיתי הכי גדול,
וכמאמר
חכמינו ז"ל: שכר מצוה מצוה,
אבל יש מקום לומר תודה בעד מילוי השליחות, ועל זה אביע תודתי רבה לכל אחד ואחת מהם.
ובהזדמנות זו, כיון שנכנסנו לחודש אלול, כאן המקום להזכיר עוד הפעם על דבר סגולת ימי חודש זה, חודש הרחמים, שהוא הכנה לראש השנה ולכל השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו לטובה, על פי
ביאור
הידוע של אדמו"ר הזקן:
משל למלך שקודם בואו לעיר יוצאין אנשי העיר לקראתו, ומקבלין פניו בשדה, ואז רשאין כל מי שרוצה לצאת להקביל פניו, והוא מקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם כו', ואחר כך בבואו להיכל מלכותו אין נכנסים כי אם ברשות ואף גם זאת המובחרים שבעם ויחידי סגולה.
וזהו ענין כל ימי חודש אלול, שאז מלך מלכי המלכים הקדוש ברוך הוא מכריז ומודיע שהוא נמצא "בשדה", וכל אחד ואחת יכולים לגשת אליו, בלי כל תנאים וקושיים והשתדלויות וכו'.
ולכאורה יש לשאול, מה הוא ענין זה של גישה אל המלך בשדה, כיון
שאין
לו דמות הגוף ואינו גוף ח"ו
וכלשון
הכתוב: כי לא ראיתם כל תמונה וגו',
הרי אדמו"ר הזקן ממשיך לבאר שענין גישה זו קשור בתפילה,
שתפילה בכלל ובפרט בימים אלה, הוא על דרך
שנאמר
:
יאר ה' פניו אליך
, פנים בפנים, המתפלל עומד נוכח פני המלך, כנ"ל במשל.
ומוסיף אשר בכדי שיהי' לזה קיום ואחיזה בפועל, צריך לבוא בעניני תורה וצדקה וחסד.
ויהי רצון שילך, כל אחד ואחת מכם,

אל חיל בכל עניני טוב וקדושה, תורה ומצוות, ויהיו לגאון ותפארת ולנחת אמיתי להוריהם ומוריהם ומחנכיהם - שיחיו - וינצלו ימי סגולה דחודש זה במילואם, ויתברכו בכתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה מתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.

I was pleased to hear that you fulfilled my request to be shluchim mitzvah (agents for a mitzvah) by giving my charity and connecting it with Torah study, and that you added your own charity as well.
Although for every mitzvah a Jew does there is no place for thanks from flesh and blood—since fulfilling a mitzvah and carrying out the will of Hashem is itself the greatest true reward and happiness, as our Sages say: 'The reward for a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself'—there is room to express thanks for fulfilling an entrusted mission. For this I extend my deep gratitude to each and every one of you.
On this occasion, since we have entered the month of Elul, it is fitting to once again mention the special quality of these days—the month of mercy—which prepares us for Rosh Hashanah and the entire upcoming new year. As explained by Admor HaZaken: It is like a king who, before entering his city, is met by its people in the field; anyone who wishes can approach him there. He receives everyone with a pleasant countenance and smiles at all. Afterwards, when he enters his palace, only select individuals may enter with permission. This is what happens throughout Elul: The King of kings, Hakadosh Baruch Hu, announces that He is in the field; anyone can approach Him without conditions or difficulties.
One might ask: What does it mean to approach the King in the field when He has no physical form? As it says: 'For you saw no image...' Admor HaZaken continues that this approach relates to prayer—especially during these days—about which it says: 'May Hashem shine His face upon you,' face-to-face; one stands before the King in prayer just as in the parable. He adds that for this connection to be lasting and practical it must come through Torah study, charity, and acts of kindness.
May it be G‑d's will that each one of you goes from strength to strength in all good things—Torah and mitzvos—and become a source of pride and true nachas for your parents and teachers. May you fully utilize these auspicious days of this month and be blessed with a good inscription and sealing for a sweet year both materially and spiritually.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Elul offers unique closeness to Hashem—like meeting a king in an open field—and urges us to use this time for Torah study, charity, prayer, and acts of kindness as preparation for Rosh Hashanah and blessings in the coming year.
