To the esteemed editorial board of "Bitaon Chabad," may Hashem be upon them and grant them life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
After a considerable pause, some of the material for the publication was received here on the 28th of Sivan with its comments, and they will notify you, etc., and their intention is to send it by the 12th of Tammuz! Before I respond regarding this, I wish to clarify the following, by way of introduction:
The "Bitaon Chabad" publication should match its name as much as possible, and therefore its responsibility (and also its merit—which should increase attention even more, etc.) is understood. It is also obvious that primarily one must clarify matters for those seeking pretexts rather than those who judge favorably. It is equally clear that the responsibility is many times greater regarding anything published in the name of our Rebbeim. Due to how self-evident this is, I will not elaborate further—especially since it has already been written up to now and faithfully assured, etc., etc.
Of several issues that seem—at least superficially—to contradict the above, I will address the most serious one and request that you explain the matter and resolve any questions. An incident was printed about Admor HaZaken (apparently without citing any source) that he ruled meat kosher and then later—at someone's request—reversed his decision and declared it non-kosher; as a result, the entire city refrained from eating meat on that occasion (this is not currently before me—but this is roughly its content). And that's all—without any addition or comment from the editorial board!
The wonder in this matter—even if it concerned a beginner student: how can such things be printed without any possible comment at all? And if you did not notice this at all—after previous mishaps (though not outright theft) and assurances given—why should there be any change in this regard in the future?
With blessing for straightforwardness in all matters,
M. Schneersohn
Summary
This letter teaches that publishing stories about our leaders requires utmost care for accuracy and context. The Rebbe urges editors to provide sources or clarifying notes so readers are not misled or confused by what they read.
