Shalom u'Vrachah!
It gave me pleasure to receive the news that this year's annual gathering is taking place before Rosh Chodesh Nisan, may it be for good. As is well known, there is a special significance in the term "Rosh" (head) in connection with Rosh Chodesh (and Rosh Hashanah). Its meaning is that it is not simply the beginning but rather the head. Just as the head concentrates within itself the vitality of the entire body and is the nerve center for all bodily functions, so too is Rosh Chodesh in relation to all days of the month (and Rosh Hashanah in relation to all days of the year).
From this we can understand the special importance of Rosh Chodesh Nisan, for Nisan is the month of redemption—the liberation of our people from Egyptian exile—which finds its highest expression on Pesach, Zman Cheiruseinu (the time of our freedom).
The redemption was twofold: physical redemption—meaning simply liberation from bodily slavery—and spiritual redemption—the freeing from spiritual enslavement that began already in Egypt (through Korban Pesach etc.) and reached its highest expression with receiving the Torah at Sinai.
This underscores the Jewish Torah concept of freedom: Even though we live in a world where material and spiritual are seen as two separate realms, a Jew can only be truly free when he is free in both areas together—both materially and spiritually—with an emphasis on freedom of the soul to conduct daily life in full harmony with G‑d's will according to Torah and mitzvos which He gave us. Only such a life has meaning and content for a Jew.
This concept must be implanted in our children from their earliest youth through a Torah-true education in Torah-true educational institutions. Of course, the home also has a very important role in children's education.
This brings out the special importance of Beis Rivkah as an educational institution where Jewish daughters are prepared to take their central place in Jewish homes as akeres habayis (the mainstay of the home), upon whom much depends regarding how the home is run and its very foundation.
Therefore it is my request and firm hope that all activists and friends of these institutions for educating girls al taharas hakodesh will do everything within their power so that this annual event—and all activities of Beis Rivkah throughout the year—should be greatly successful. May this merit stand by all activists, friends, and supporters to receive blessings from Above for themselves and their families in everything they need—both materially and spiritually together.
