באיחור רב נתקבל מכתבה, בו כותבת על דבר תכנית עבודת מחקר בקשר עם תנועת חב"ד ואשר כבר באה במגע עם אנשי חב"ד בכפר חב"ד, ושואלת דעתי.
ועל פי סגנון כתבה, בודאי יודעת ממאמר חכמינו

בטח ידוע לה שיש שתי הוראות בענין משפיע ומושפע, אשר לכאורה סותרות הן אחת לרעותה, אבל שתיהן הובאו בתור הוראה הלכה למעשה. האחת אומרת:

הרב דומה למלאך, קבל תורה ממנו, והשני' אומרת:
קבל
את האמת ממי שאמרו.
והנה, יהי' ישוב הסתירה האמורה מה שיהי', אבל הנסיון מורה שכשהרב הוא דוגמא חי' לתורתו שהוא מלמד, אזי הצלחה מיוחדת וגדולה להוראות אלו. כוונתי כפשוטה, ויותר נכון תקותי, אשר גם בחיי' הפרטיים תהי' דוגמא חי' לחיי יום-יום על פי תורת חב"ד. ואף שלכאורה מהי השייכות של חקירה מדעית של ההוי החב"די וכו', הרי, כאמור, התכלית הוא המעשה וההוראה בנוגע למעשים בפועל.

Your letter was received after a considerable delay, in which you write about your planned research project connected with the Chabad movement. You mention that you have already come into contact with Chabad members in Kfar Chabad and ask for my opinion.
Based on the style of your letter, you surely know our Sages' saying in their teachings that "the deed is the main thing." This principle should also serve as a touchstone for your intended research—meaning it should be evaluated from the perspective of whether it will bring desirable and practical benefit; in this regard, how good it is when done in the spirit of Chabad Torah.
You are certainly aware that there are two instructions regarding mashpia (influencer) and mushpa (recipient), which seem at first glance to contradict each other but are both brought as practical guidance. One says: "If the teacher resembles an angel, receive Torah from him," while the other says: "Accept the truth from whoever says it." However this apparent contradiction may be resolved, experience shows that when the teacher is a living example of what he teaches, these instructions achieve special and great success.
I mean this simply—and more accurately, I hope—that in your personal life you will also be a living example of day-to-day life according to Chabad teachings. Even though it may seem that scientific investigation into Chabad life has little connection to this idea, as mentioned above, the ultimate purpose is action and guidance regarding actual deeds.

The Rebbe teaches that research about Chabad should focus on its practical impact and encourages being a living example of its values. The true measure of study is how it influences daily actions and brings real benefit.
