Shalom u'Vrachah!
The period of preparation for Rosh Hashanah—the day when the Almighty completed the creation of the world with the creation of the choicest of beings, man—is also a time to contemplate creation and its manner. As with everything, we must derive lessons from it—even for our daily lives, since action is paramount.
According to the Creator's will that "Mah Rabu Maasecha" (how manifold are Your works), the world consists of countless distinct and varied things. Yet at the same time, all things possess certain inner traits that connect and unify them into one entity. This is understandable since all things were created by the one and only Creator—by Havayah Echad; therefore there is an inner and true unity in all things He created—from mineral to human.
Of course, this unity is more apparent among things belonging to the same category: mineral (domem), plant (tzomeach), animal (chai), or human (medaber). Our Sages especially highlighted this idea regarding mankind: they said that the Creator formed all people with the same seal (stamp)—the seal of Adam HaRishon—yet all people are different so that no two are alike in every respect: "in their faces they do not resemble each other," and in three ways people differ from one another: in voice (kol), appearance (mareh), and understanding (daas).
The principle of diversity alongside unity in all things applies also to time. Time is divided into day and night, weekdays and Shabbos and Yom Tov, etc., each with its own unique qualities and meanings both generally and specifically for man. Yet there are also elements that connect and unify all times into one continuum.
This applies to Rosh Hashanah as well: all Rosh Hashanahs are similar in many aspects—such as general instructions for the new year—and as often mentioned, Rosh Hashanah is "the head of the year." Yet each Rosh Hashanah is something new and unique—it brings a unique renewal into the world: new powers and qualities.
This uniqueness stands out especially when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos—as it does this year. In such a case, the holiness of Rosh Hashanah merges with that of Shabbos, giving this Rosh Hashanah a new meaning and content which—as head of the year—must be reflected throughout daily life for the entire year.
The general difference between weekdays and Shabbos—especially regarding man—is that weekdays are workdays ("Sheishet Yamim Taavod Ve'asita Kol Melachtecha") while Shabbos is a day without work ("Lo Ta'aseh Kol Melachah"), a day of rest. Seemingly this is puzzling: from birth—as Torah points out—"Adam Le'Amal Yulad" (man was born to labor), with intervals of rest like sleep so he can continue his toil. Thus it would seem that when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos—which then emphasizes as head/leader of all days in the coming year this aspect of "Lo Ta'aseh Kol Melachah"—this contradicts "Adam Le'Amal Yulad."
One explanation resolving this contradiction is: Man consists of various components—mainly body and soul. Therefore in all his matters there is a combination of body and soul; in other words—spirituality and physicality. Also regarding "Adam Le'Amal Yulad," there are both physical toil (amal gashmi) and spiritual toil (amal ruchni)—or as our Sages call it: toil in work (amal melachah) versus toil in Torah (amal Torah).
More specifically: The division between physicality and spirituality exists within both types of toil; within amal melachah as well as amal Torah there are both physical aspects and spiritual aspects—and just as Shabbos represents a Jew's "Adam Le'Amal Yulad" within amal Torah—so too does Rosh Hashanah falling on Shabbos instruct us that throughout all days of the coming year one's main toil should be in Torah study (and mitzvos), but even within one's occupational efforts one should bring out—and emphasize—the spirituality within them.
In other words: Every Jew—man or woman, young or old—is expected to bring Shabbos-like qualities into their entire toil—even into weekday labors; to infuse spirituality and holiness even into ordinary daily matters until they become entirely permeated with Shabbos-ness.
To give a simple example: When someone has a job or business etc., its purpose is income—a livelihood. However, there must be spirituality—the soul—in this too; namely "Kol Maasecha L'Shem Shamayim" (all your actions should be for holy purposes): One must give tzedakah, have peace-of-mind to learn Torah, pay tuition for children’s Torah study etc.; thus he engages in his work precisely to achieve these goals. And when he is permeated with this spiritual intent—it goes without saying that his work will not hinder his Torah study or mitzvah observance; he will give tzedakah from his best etc.
One might ask: How can anyone reach such a level every single day throughout an entire year? The answer is clear for everyone: Since G‑d—the Creator—gave him this instruction, it’s certain that everyone regardless of upbringing or level has already been given the powers needed to fulfill it—and moreover—to do so joyfully! As we say: "B’cha Havayah Chasisi" (“In You Hashem I have trusted”)—it’s certain “Al Evosha Le’olam” (“I shall never be shamed”). Especially since it begins from Rosh Hashanah—when Jews crown G‑d as King (“U’Malchuso B’Ratzon Kiblu Aleihem”), every Jew becomes an “Eved Melech Melech” (“servant of a king is himself like a king”).
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that just as creation unites diversity under one Creator, so too should we infuse our diverse daily activities with unity through spirituality—especially when Rosh Hashanah coincides with Shabbos. Every Jew has G‑d-given strength to elevate everyday life with holiness.
