Shalom u'Vrachah!
Mrs. Tamar sheyichyeh Bar-Lev
Blessings and greetings! I hereby acknowledge—though belatedly due to many preoccupations and I ask your forgiveness—the receipt of your letter, and thank you greatly for your good wishes.
In the meantime, you have surely received the letter from here and my joint letter to you and your husband.
This is an opportunity to comment on your expression regarding your 'lowly status': Even though it is typical for Jewish men and women to minimize themselves—as our Sages explained on the verse 'Ki Atem HaMe'at Mikol HaAmim' ("For you are the fewest of all peoples")—nevertheless, everyone must appreciate their position in society, for fulfilling one's role completely depends on this.
I refer to your position as a lecturer at the university; this gives you both the right and opportunity to influence the young people who listen to your teachings. In practice, regardless of the subject taught, students are influenced not only by acquiring knowledge in the field but also by the personality of their lecturer.
You surely know that one of the foundations of our faith and religion is that a single soul is an entire world. Our Sages, in their concise and precise style, explain that this is why Adam was created alone—not like other creatures who were created in multitudes—to teach all generations that one person is an entire world.
Another point: Since lecturing—whatever the subject—is part of a person's thought process and even practical life, it certainly has implications for one's life in its true sense; I mean a life that is moral, pure, and holy.
Therefore, when Divine Providence has granted you the opportunity to use your talents in this direction, it is clear that this becomes your obligation—and it is not enough to merely teach the subject matter alone.
With blessings for success and with honor. Regards to your husband sheyichyeh.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that every individual can profoundly impact others through both knowledge and personal example. Recognizing one's unique position enables fulfilling one's purpose fully—especially when influencing youth—and moral conduct must accompany professional teaching roles.
