To the students of Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch Yeshivos, may Hashem be upon them for life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
As we stand in these days and those adjacent to them, it is customary to connect the events of the week with the weekly Torah portion, especially in our case with the portion relating to the Festival of Redemption on Yud-Beis–Yud-Gimmel Tammuz, which begins next week at the conclusion and seal of this week. We must contemplate—as instructed by Scripture: Ami zechor na mah ya’atz... u’mah anah... (My people, remember what Balak advised... and what Bilaam answered...)—the introduction to that topic from Bilaam’s own words: "Ki meirosh tzurim er’enu u’migva’os ashurenu" (For from the top of rocks I see him, and from hills I behold him), as Rashi explains: I look at their beginnings and roots and see them founded and strong like these rocks and hills—through their fathers and mothers.
The explanation is that it is openly known to all inhabitants of the world—even among non-Jews—that the endurance, strength, and might of the Jewish people are rooted in their fathers and mothers. This inheritance is passed on to every single son and daughter of Israel; it is like a natural trait within our souls at all times and in all places. This is what makes us a unique entity in the world—hen am levadad yishkon uvagoyim lo yitchashav (Behold! A nation that dwells alone, not reckoned among nations).
From here comes an immediate conclusion—mi manah afar Yaakov u’mispar et rova Yisrael (Who can count the dust of Yaakov or number even a quarter of Israel)—meaning: The importance of holy offspring, sons and daughters of Israel; that is to say, when they behave appropriately as children of Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, and daughters of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, Leah—this ensures that all Jews will be founded and strong like these rocks and hills. Literally—as our ancestors were compared to rocks and hills.
These qualities exist within—and ultimately become revealed in—every member of our people Israel, young or old. However, it is understood that they are most powerfully expressed in a Nasi in Israel—even more so in our generation’s Nasi who experienced joy and redemption—who did not heed those who hated Judaism or sought to uproot Torah and mitzvos. He fought them fearlessly with true self-sacrifice until he brought victory and redemption not only for himself but also for all who cherish our holy Torah, observe mitzvos, or are called by the name Israel.
As Rashi explains on this week’s parsha: The Nasi HaDor (leader of the generation) is as the entire generation—for he embodies everything. That means: The self-sacrifice and actions of the Nasi HaDor add strength to every individual in his generation to walk uprightly as he taught us—to continue his activities strengthening Torah and Judaism everywhere at all times—and especially among students and alumni of yeshivos or educational institutions conducted in his spirit or even founded by him.
May it be G‑d’s will that all students and alumni of these yeshivos or educational institutions everywhere go from strength to strength; may they act diligently in Torah study with persistence—and fulfill its mitzvos beautifully—with joy and gladness of heart. Until it can truly be said about each one: "Kemoft hayiti larabim v’atah machsi oz" (I have been a wonder to many; You are my strong refuge).
With abundant blessings for great success—and for good tidings regarding all mentioned above,
M. Schneersohn
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that every Jew inherits spiritual strength from our ancestors; this foundation is especially revealed through following the guidance of our generation’s leader. By connecting with these roots through Torah study and mitzvah observance with joy, we strengthen ourselves individually and collectively.
