Shalom u'Vrachah!

To Mrs. Sheina Zelda, may she live. Blessings and peace!

I received your letter some time ago, and for understandable reasons it was difficult to respond, as it is hard to find the right words and appropriate matters. However, on the day after your mother's yahrzeit (may her memory be a blessing), and in connection with the thoughts of that day—since both the time and emotion are more suited for replying to your letter and expressing some thoughts following yesterday—here are some points:

Certainly, since Hashem is the essence of good, and it is the nature of good to do good, it is absolutely certain that in every matter and event there is good—not only regarding life in the World to Come but also in our world where Torah and its mitzvos were given. In fact, their main purpose is in this world, as it says: "Lo BaShamayim Hi" ("It is not in heaven").

Another point—which is one of the fundamental teachings for Jewish life both collectively and individually—is that action is primary. In everything there is an essential point. Based on this, it is understood that even in such an event as happened to you—that a soul of a close relative ascended to heaven—despite feelings of loss etc., one must seek out the good even here and translate it into practical daily living.

One aspect here: since we are speaking about a soul's ascent to heaven of someone close, those connected to them should continue activities in which the departed engaged during their lifetime—in actual deed; in addition to each person's own obligation to be active in this world as much as possible.

Since Divine Providence has assigned an additional role or activity to those living on earth, surely beforehand they were given all necessary strengths to fulfill this task properly. As with any mission assigned by Divine Providence, it must be done with vigor and vitality; any thought or matter that confuses or diminishes this must be forcefully dismissed with both hands—for such confusion disturbs not only those alive but also (to distinguish between living and departed) the soul of the deceased. This activity brings her satisfaction and elevation because now she knows clearly that these actions are done for her merit—as if by her own agency.

From all this it is clear there is no room for conclusions about loneliness etc.; on the contrary—such an event should lead one to increased activity among people with greater energy and broader scope.

As discussed elsewhere—and simple logic confirms without doubt—there is no basis for saying that any physical illness affects the soul or its vitality or eternity. The change lies only in how soul connects with body—a connection which itself imposes limitations on the soul; when this link ends so do those limitations. Any activity anywhere becomes immediately known to the soul now unbound by place or time or physical senses.

I will conclude by wishing you arrange your life so you can use your talents for public benefit beyond just personal gain—with vigor and vitality—and may Hashem bless you with long life, many good years, successful arrangements manifestly good in every detail.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches us to transform grief over a loved one's passing into positive action by continuing their legacy through mitzvos and community involvement. Recognizing G‑d's goodness even amid loss empowers us to live energetically and bring merit both to ourselves and those who have passed on.
