Mrs. Nechama, may she live, Lipschitz
Blessings and greetings! I have just received your letter from January 22nd, and I thank you very much for your good wishes. It gave me pleasure to receive news about your genuine success in London, especially as I hope that in connection with and as a continuation of our conversations when you were here, your success will be used—by you and others—to bring Jews closer to Judaism, true Judaism. In this lies the existence and strength of Jews wherever they are found and under whatever conditions: whether these are conditions of external oppression and restrictions or internal wars and conflicts. In all these situations, Jews need extraordinary strength to withstand and succeed.
It is a certainty—as we see from our people's several-thousand-year history—that in the end Jews prevail. However, it is a loss of time and a loss of souls (G‑d forbid), as well as bodies that suffer due to alienation or insufficient closeness and attachment of some Jews with certain aspects of Judaism.
In essence, after the utmost importance of a Jewish heart and feeling—which both derive from the Jewish soul—this must nevertheless be expressed in practical deeds. Just as one must be alive every day and all day long, so too must it be evident in daily life through one's actions that this is a Jew, and that these deeds are done by a Jew to connect him with his source: he eats differently than others; conducts his business differently than others; etc. All the more so when it comes to Shabbat or Yom Tov—then the entire day is different from other days of the year. Unlike other nations where the difference is simply between a workday and a rest day, for Jews these are called weekday days versus Shabbat or Yom Tov days—that is, holy days as opposed to weekdays—and rest is only an aspect and result of holiness.
After what you have gone through, you yourself have seen how all other approaches to ensuring the survival of the Jewish people have failed. The only thing that sustains us is when a Jew is connected with Simchat Torah and with a synagogue; this sustains him until he has the opportunity to conduct himself as a Jew in all details: learning Torah—in simple terms: Shulchan Aruch—and mitzvot performed openly. Then Simchat Torah fulfills its true function: that the Jew rejoices with the Torah (which becomes his Torah—from the word 'hora'ah,' instruction) all year long; and the Torah rejoices with him, seeing that it is not something he keeps in a museum but rather a living Torah that permeates his life.
I hope that as we discussed upon parting, you will continue for many years to use your abilities to awaken those you meet to feel deeply connected with Judaism—and now being able to speak freely—to also add the content and spirit described above: that they should show their Jewish pride even publicly. The logical and only possible outcome of this is simple: eating Jewish (kosher), speaking Jewish (without lashon hara etc.), and generally conducting oneself on weekdays as well as on Shabbat and Yom Tov as described above.
With wishes for continued success and good news.
P.S. Naturally I was pained seeing the publicity made about the situation concerning your good friends there. However, I hope our discussions about this will bring benefit in future cases—that at least regarding them people will follow the right path so that it results in good for them—not G‑d forbid the opposite.
P.P.S. I permit myself here also to make the following remark—which was naturally uncomfortable to make when we met in the presence of others—and that is: I hope you are taking care regarding your own situation and order (I mean you yourself), that so long as there remains a strong first impression—a welcoming—etc., you should ensure proper arrangements for yourself—including simply arranging things physically too—according to the well-known folk saying: strike while the iron is hot.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true Jewish identity must be lived out through practical observance every day—not just felt inwardly—and encourages using one's influence to inspire others toward authentic connection with Judaism both privately and publicly.
