To all participants in the annual dinner of Merkaz HaYeshivos Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch, may Hashem be upon you, may you live.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
On the occasion of the annual celebration of Merkaz HaYeshivos Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch, I send greetings and blessings to the honored guests and all participants and friends of the yeshivah.
Since this celebration takes place tomorrow after Shabbos Parshas Yisro, the portion about Matan Torah and the Ten Commandments, it is fitting to note a special connection between this event and the content of this parsha.
The Ten Commandments, in which all 613 mitzvos of the Torah are rooted, begin with mitzvos between man and G‑d and end with mitzvos between man and his fellow. This underscores that even the most basic concepts of morality and ethics can only have true value and permanence when they are founded on "Anochi Hashem Elokecha" (I am Hashem your G‑d) and "Lo Yihiyeh Lecha Elohim Acherim" (You shall have no other gods before Me).
The course of general human history has repeatedly shown that people and nations cannot progress when moral and ethical laws are not based on faith in the Creator of the world but only on human intellect alone; such laws can then be changed or adapted to fit unrestrained desires of the times. The current state of today's world is the best proof of this.
In Jewish life especially, there can be no separation between mitzvos between man and his fellow and mitzvos between man and G‑d. The unity of Jewish faith in Hashem Echad (the One G‑d), and the unity of the Jewish people — "Goy Echad Ba'Aretz" (one nation in the land) — must permeate every Jew in all aspects of daily life so that a harmonious unity is created between material and spiritual matters in daily conduct, where spirituality and holiness are the dominant and decisive factors.
Just as educating a child in matters between man and his fellow — to have good relationships with friends, respect for parents and elders, etc. — must begin from early childhood (which everyone agrees upon), so too must a Jewish child be educated in the spirit of Torah and mitzvos from an early age. Only then is it a true and complete education — a Torah education — in accordance with King Solomon's instruction: "Chanoch LaNaar Al Pi Darko, Gam Ki Yazkin Lo Yasur Mimena" (Educate a child according to his way; even when he grows old he will not depart from it) (Mishlei 22:6).
Such an education — a complete education — is realized in Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch educational institutions, which have already raised generations of complete Jews, temimim, both in matters between man and G‑d as well as between man and his fellow; an education permeated with Ahavas Hashem (love for G‑d), Ahavas HaTorah (love for Torah), and Ahavas Yisrael (love for fellow Jews) — these three loves unitedly expressed in daily conduct.
This is also their driving force that gives them even mesirus nefesh (self-sacrifice) to strengthen, spread, and revive Torah Judaism in this country as well as all other parts of the world.
This year, considering the great undertaking regarding the new building for Central Lubavitcher Yeshivah, it is hoped that all friends of the yeshivah will make a special effort on this occasion to provide necessary help and support so that it can continue its vital work.
May Hashem bless each one of you with utmost success both in this matter as well as in all your affairs — general as well as personal — materially and spiritually together.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that authentic morality stems from faith-based values rooted in Torah. Holistic Jewish education must start from childhood to create unity between spiritual ideals and daily life. Supporting yeshivos ensures future generations embody these principles.
