Shalom u'Vrachah! Blessings and peace!
Although I do not know you personally, since I have heard much about you from your husband Mr. ... shiy', I allow myself to address you in the following lines and hope you will not mind.
After our connection through letters, I was pleased to meet your husband personally during his extended visit here. Based on our several conversations, in which he shared with me highlights of his life story, I was glad to see that he found inner peace through his connection—furthermore—to a worldview derived from our Torah of life and truth. This peace borders on and brings about inner happiness and contentment.
Certainly this closeness—which results in tranquility, harmony, and happiness—is possible with the help of Hashem as written: "the helper," meaning the wife. This view was confirmed for me by your husband's stories about the help he found in you and your support in general, especially regarding this matter.
It is unnecessary to elaborate on the necessity of inner peace and harmony for a person's life to be worthy of its name—especially in our era full of upheavals both in public life and private life. Therefore my strong hope is that just as in the past so too in the future—you will stand by your husband's side also in this closeness and progress; for like all living things, certainly this closeness will continue to grow.
My intention is that both of you together should ascend in life according to our Torah of life. In all this I felt there is room to write explicitly—a letter whose purpose is to express hope along with encouragement and strengthening—since sometimes one encounters difficulties along this path of progress; especially (as our Sages taught) when meeting people who have not yet reached this state and try to bolster themselves by mocking or belittling those who have advanced further in worldview—Torah and faith.
Our Sages warned us not to be ashamed before those who mock—knowing human nature that this is not an easy test. My intention also refers specifically here regarding growing a beard—which I saw your husband begin during his stay here—that it is called by our Sages "the garment of the Holy One Blessed Be He" and bestows upon a Jewish man the image of Elokim (Divine image), as told in several Midrashim. This was not easy for your husband (mainly due to mockers), but nonetheless without any outside influence he began—and it seems this too added further foundation for his inner peace and sense that he stands firmly on Torah and mitzvah.
This is a main purpose of my letter: to ask and express my hope that you will also assist him in this matter—encouraging him to continue joyfully and peacefully.
I am aware there are some Jews who observe Torah and mitzvos yet do not grow a beard; as explained are differences among authorities. However, here we speak not only from a halachic perspective but mainly about its effects on the individual concerned—which are more than satisfactory; indeed much more so. The matter of growing a beard joins other positive developments in his recent years—including your relationship—to add light and vitality into his life; certainly it will add into yours as well.
The value of this achievement far outweighs any ridicule from some around him—which as mentioned really reflects their own self-justification when their conscience troubles them; it's easier for them to belittle those whom even they recognize as superior. Certainly no need for lengthy discussion here.
I wish only to add another point—also essential here—a quote from Rabbeinu the tzt"z: Growing a beard has special merit for drawing down Hashem's blessing abundantly both quantitatively and qualitatively. Thus anyone needing additional blessing from Hashem—whether health or livelihood or especially spiritually—should pursue this progress ever more strongly. Especially since we are assured: "One who comes to purify himself is greatly assisted from Above."
May their property matters—the home etc.—also be arranged satisfactorily; may they be blessed by Hashem with all they need spiritually and materially; may you share good news regarding all these matters.
Summary
The Rebbe encourages supporting one's spouse's spiritual growth even when facing social challenges. Such support brings inner peace, harmony, blessings from Above, and strengthens both partners' lives together according to Torah values.
