בעתו נתקבל מכתבו מה7- ליאַנואַר, ואף על פי שאין תחת ידי קרנות למטרות אלו, אבל באופן יוצא מן הכלל, כיון שגם כ' פנה אלי באופן יוצא מן הכלל, מסרתי למזכירות שלי למלא מבוקשתו ככל האפשר ותקותי שכבר קבל החומרים שבקש.
בהזדמנות זו חובתי נעימה להביע לו תודתי על הטיפול רפואי שהושיט למר ד.ש. ועוד ועיקר בעד השימת לב והסברת פנים מצד כ' ועוזריו. ובודאי למותר להדגיש גודל
החשיבות
אצל החולה סבר פנים יפות של הרופא. ואף
ששכר
מצוה מצוה, סיפוק הרופא שמילא חובתו לרפא חולים וכולי, הרי גם חובתי ומצוה המוטלת עלי להביע נחת רוח שלי מהידיעות שקבלתי בזה.
ויהי רצון אשר כיון שחיים אנו בתקופה שלעת עתה נמצאים כמה וכמה הזקוקים לרפואה בכלל, ובפרט בשטח שהתמחה בו כ' – רפואת עיניים, שיצליח לרפאות חולים ועד לרפואתם שלימה. וכן יהי רצון שינצל השפעתו גם לפקוח עיניים עיוורות בנוגע לאור התורה ומאור שבה, לראות האור הזה כי טוב, שכל אחד ואחת מהם ומאתנו יגשם בחייו וגם בימים האפורים – בסגנון הנביא – שאו מרום עיניכם וראו מי ברא אלה (ישעי' מ, כו), ובהמשך הכתובים שם – למה תאמר יעקב ותדבר ישראל נסתרה דרכי מה' גו' וקווי ה' יחליפו כח יעלו אבר כנשרים גו'. והרי

Your letter dated January 7 was received in due course. Although I do not have funds available for such purposes, in this exceptional case—since you also approached me in an exceptional manner—I have instructed my secretariat to fulfill your request as much as possible, and I hope you have already received the materials you requested.
On this occasion, it is my pleasant duty to express my gratitude for the medical treatment you provided to Mr. D.S., and especially for the attention and pleasant demeanor shown by you and your assistants. It is certainly unnecessary to emphasize how important a doctor's pleasant countenance is for the patient.
Even though the reward for a mitzvah is itself a mitzvah—the satisfaction a doctor feels from fulfilling his duty to heal patients—nevertheless, it is also my obligation and mitzvah to express my pleasure upon receiving such reports.
May it be G‑d's will that since we live in a time when many people are in need of healing in general—and especially in your field of expertise, ophthalmology—you should succeed in healing patients until their complete recovery. May it also be G‑d's will that you use your influence to open blind eyes regarding the light of Torah and its illumination, so that everyone among them and among us will realize this light is good—even on gray days—as the prophet says: "S'u marom eineichem u're'u mi bara eileh" (Lift up your eyes on high and see who created these—Yeshayahu 40:26), and further: "Why do you say, Jacob... My way is hidden from Hashem... But those who hope in Hashem will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles..." Residents of our holy land—a land upon which the eyes of Hashem are always from the beginning of the year until its end—have seen this with their own fleshly eyes in recent months.
