Shalom u'Vrachah!
Surely you received my letter regarding your birthday. It is surprising that for quite a long time I have not received a letter from you, even though I naturally inquire about you and receive reports through Anash (our community members), may they live and be well.
May it be G‑d's will that as we come from the day of good tidings and redemption—the 10th of Kislev—and as we stand on the eve of Chanukah, all your matters should be among those of every single Jew, in a manner of increasing light: light that comes from pure oil, illuminating the home of every Jew, and in such a way that it shines at the entrance to his house facing outward. That is to say, it also illuminates the outside. Moreover, as our Sages teach, the time for lighting Chanukah candles is "from when the sun sets," meaning we illuminate even the darkness of night outside. And this is done in an ever-increasing manner from day to day until ultimately the prophetic promise will be fulfilled: "The night will shine like day" (as explained in Likkutei Sichos on Bamidbar 8:1).
With esteem and respect and with blessings for an illuminating and joyous Chanukah.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Chanukah is a time to increase in spiritual light—not only within ourselves but also outwardly—so that even external darkness is illuminated. Our actions should continually grow brighter until all darkness is transformed into light.
