B"H, Eve of Chanukah, 5728. Brooklyn, NY.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I received your letter from Thursday of Parshas Vayetze.
As we discussed when you visited here, it is my firm opinion that the decision regarding your son's study arrangements, and all its details, depends on your son and his own decision. As I told you then, this is not only for his benefit but also for the benefit of all those close to him. In general, he is already at an age where there is no place to command him (in this matter).
May the One Above, Who supervises each individual with Divine Providence, bless you with all that you need—especially what is inwardly important: to have true Jewish nachas from your son in ever-increasing measure, in the spirit of the Chanukah lights which we kindle by adding one more light each day.
With honor and blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that as children mature, their educational choices should be guided by their own decisions rather than imposed by parents. This approach brings benefit to both child and family and leads to ever-increasing Jewish nachas.
