Shalom u'Vrachah!
Your letter with its enclosure was received after some delay. It is understood that I agree with you regarding the content of your letter. Allow me to add a comment—my hope is you will not take offense—that I am surprised by your question concerning the conduct of the organizations to which you wrote your response. After all, "kam lei b'derabei minei" (the greater liability takes precedence).
I mean to say: since there is an organization whose very name indicates and emphasizes that it is a religious organization—such as the Synagogue Council and similar bodies—then every member who participates and becomes part of it officially recognizes before the public the religious authority of all its members. At the same time, in this organization there are those whom the Rambam lists in his Hilchos Teshuvah (chapter 3, halachah 7 and onward). Furthermore, if until recently this organization lacked those whom the Rambam begins with—the one who says there is no G‑d—recently we have "merited" that even this type has joined and been accepted into this organization. Nevertheless, people continue to be members of this body; how then is this different from giving an award to Dr. So-and-so?
With honor and blessing.
Incidentally, it is worth mentioning what occurred at one of the meetings of the executive committee of the organization to which you wrote your response. Although I was not present at that meeting, I heard about it from a source still considered reliable: one attendee proposed that since it has recently emerged that among Reform rabbis there are those who say there is no G‑d, it is necessary at least now to leave this organization. Of all those gathered, not one voted in favor of this proposal. And that should suffice.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that joining religious organizations with members who deny core Torah beliefs can imply recognition of their authority and should be avoided. One must be vigilant about associations that may compromise Torah principles or lend legitimacy to views contrary to faith in G‑d.
