Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 20th of Nissan, in which you write about your daughter, etc. It is not clear from your letter whether you have utilized as much as possible the influence of others on her—certainly there are such people at her school where she studied and likely also among army officials. We see at every step that often the influence on children coming from friends, especially if they are around the same age, is more successful than direct influence from parents. Even though this seems obvious, I felt it necessary to mention it.

Since all family members are connected not only physically but also spiritually, it is understood that an increase in fear of Heaven by any family member brings an increase in this regard for the rest of the family as well—especially when parents increase their own observance regarding their children; the greater the parents' efforts, the greater the result.

Additionally, sometimes such situations occur because at the time of conception with this child there was not enough care taken regarding observing the laws of family purity (niddah, hefsek taharah, immersion in a kosher mikvah, etc.), whether due to lack of knowledge or other reasons. Since teshuvah is effective even retroactively to a significant degree, one should strive to observe these matters both personally and for others—and here too, the more one does so, the better.

It is proper to check all mezuzot in your home to ensure they are kosher according to halachah and also his tefillin—if this has not been done in the past twelve months. Each weekday before putting on tefillin he should set aside some coins for tzedakah; his wife should maintain the good custom of Jewish women to give tzedakah before lighting candles every Friday and festival eve.

At an auspicious time they will be mentioned—when you provide their names (including mother's name)—at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, for fulfillment of their heart's desires for good.

That your daughter should travel to a country with very few Jews (both in number and quality)—I do not agree with this at all.

Blessings for good news in all matters mentioned above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that when facing challenges with a child's choices—especially regarding relationships—it is vital to harness positive peer influence, strengthen spiritual observance within the family, uphold mitzvahs like mezuzah and tzedakah, and avoid isolating Jewish youth from vibrant communities.
