במענה למכתבו ובהמשך למה שנדבר עם הוריו שי' בשיחתנו, בו שואל.
א) מאנ"ש וחסידים המתעסקים באתרוגי קאלאברי הוא הרה"ח רב פעלים הרר"י שי' דזייקאבסאן (אשר כמדומה היו בקשרים זע"ז מכבר) אשר הנ"ל בעצמו ביקר בהפרדסים של אתרוגים אשר באיטליא ובחן בהם.
ב) כן להנ"ל ידוע בנוגע להסימנים והאופן איך להכיר שהאילן אינו מורכב.
ג) במ"ש אודות אופן גידול העוקץ וכן בנוגע להבליטות - יש לברר האם גדלים באותו אילן עצמו בבליטות וגם בלי בליטות, כן בהנוגע להשינוים בהעוקץ, כי כמדומה שבספרים לא נמצא ע"ד פרטים כהנ"ל שכותבם בתוככי סימנים באם נמצאו באותו האילן וצריך לברר אצל מי שהי' על אתר וראה בעצמו.
ד) התקוה שלע"ע כבר קבל פ"ש מכאן מהוריו שי' וכן מהאורחים ממנשסתר שביקרו כאן בזמן מתן תורתנו, השבועות שלפניו ושלאחריו וכן מהמדובר בזמני רצון האמורים, ויהי רצון שיפעלו הדברים פעולתם מתאים לתוכנם שהמעשה הוא העיקר.

נ.ב. כבר מובא מס' בכורי יעקב סו"ס תרמ"ח דאין לסמוך על הסימנים גם לא להחמיר. ואף שהוא היפך דעת כו"כ מהאחרונים - י"ל שעכ"פ גם לדעתם כשיש מסורת על המדינה ובאותו אילן עצמו גדלים אתרוגים בסימנים - גם שאר האתרוגים שבאילן כשרים (שהרי לכל הדעות סימנים אלו - לבד קליפתו עבה להחת"ס - אינם מובהקים וכו').

In response to your letter and following up on what was discussed with your parents during our conversation, in which you ask: a) Among Anash and Chassidim involved with Calabrian etrogim is Haraha"ch Rav Pe'alim Harari"y Sheyichye Dzaikobson (with whom you apparently have already been in contact), who personally visited the etrog orchards in Italy and examined them. b) This individual is also knowledgeable regarding the signs and the method for recognizing that a tree is not grafted. c) Regarding what you wrote about the manner of growing the pitom and also concerning the bumps—one should clarify whether both bumpy and smooth etrogim grow on the same tree, as well as regarding differences in the pitom; for it seems that such detailed points as you mention are not found in books as internal signs if they are present on the same tree, so one must inquire from someone who was present at the site and saw for himself. d) Hopefully by now you have already received regards from here from your parents as well as from the guests from Manchester who visited here during Matan Torah—the weeks before and after—and regarding what was discussed at those auspicious times. May it be G‑d's will that these matters have their intended effect according to their content: that action is paramount.

P.S. It is already cited in Sefer Bikkurei Yaakov at the end of Siman 648 that one should not rely on signs—not even to be stringent. And although this is contrary to the opinion of many later authorities—it can be said that even according to them, when there is a tradition about a region and on that very tree both types of etrogim grow with these signs—then all other etrogim on that tree are kosher (for according to all opinions these signs—except for thick peel per Chatam Sofer—are not definitive, etc.).
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while external signs are helpful in identifying kosher etrogim, authentic tradition carries significant weight in halachic decisions. When possible, one should consult those with firsthand experience rather than relying solely on written sources or visible indicators.
