לקראת חג המצות, זמן חירותינו, הבא עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה, הנני להביע לו ולכל אשר לו חג כשר ושמח וחירות אמתית, חירות בגשם וברוח, חירות מכל ענינים המבלבלים עבודת ה' בשמחה ובטוב לבב,
ולהמשיך מחירות ושמחה זו בכל ימות השנה.

נעם לי להוודע שבמהדורה החדשה של ספרו על הפרושים דוחה דיעות נפסדות שנכנסו לתוך ספרו במהדורא קמא, ואף שלא ראיתי את ספרו, אבל נאמן הוא המקור שממנו נובעת הידיעה הנ"ל שהיתה לי לקורת רוח ועל כגון דא אומר לו יישר חילו וימשיך בכיוון זה. והרי מעלת האדם היא שהוא מהלך (שבזה נעלה הוא גם על מלאכי עליון שאינם אלא עומדים). וזהו גם ענין של יציאת מצרים בכל יום - לצאת מן המצרים והגבולים ולעלות גם עלה, בעלי' אחרי' עלי'. ומעשה הוא העיקר, כמובן, קיום המצות מעשיות שגם בזה, ובפרט בזה, צריך להיות מעלין בקדש, כולל מצות ואהבת לרעך כמוך בהדגשה ובהשפעה על הזולת. וכבר מלתי אמורה, וכמדומה לי גם כתבתי לכ' במכתבי הקודם, שהנוער מוכן ומזומן לשמוע ולקבל הרבה יותר מאשר משערים. ועוד בענין זה במכתבי הכללי מענינא דיומא המצ"ב.

As we approach the Festival of Matzos, the season of our freedom that is coming upon us and all Israel for good, I wish to express to you and all yours my blessings for a kosher and joyous festival and for true freedom—freedom both materially and spiritually, freedom from anything that confuses the service of Hashem with joy and gladness of heart. May this freedom and joy continue throughout the entire year. With honor and blessing.
I was pleased to learn that in the new edition of your book on the Perushim you have rejected erroneous opinions that had entered your earlier edition. Although I have not seen your book myself, the source from which this information comes is trustworthy. This brought me satisfaction; for such matters I say: may your strength increase and may you continue in this direction.
The greatness of a person is that he is a 'mehalech' (one who progresses)—in this he surpasses even the highest angels who are only 'standing.' This is also the idea of leaving Egypt every day—to go out from limitations and boundaries and to ascend ever higher, one elevation after another.
Action is what counts most—especially fulfilling practical mitzvos—and in this area too (and particularly here), one must always increase in holiness. This includes especially the mitzvah of 'Ve'ahavta l'reiacha kamocha' (Love your fellow as yourself), with emphasis and influence on others.
I have already stated—and I believe I also wrote to you in my previous letter—that youth are ready and prepared to listen and accept much more than people generally assume. More on this topic can be found in my general letter about matters relevant to these days which is attached.
Summary
The Rebbe encourages Professor Finkelstein to pursue continual spiritual growth by increasing in mitzvos—especially Ahavas Yisrael—and assures him that youth are receptive to positive influence when approached sincerely.
