National gathering of yeshiva administrators around the 23rd of Iyar, Ferndale, NY. May Hashem be upon them and grant them life.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your notification about your gathering, may it be G‑d's will that it be exceedingly successful with tangible results—a gathering sanctified with supreme holiness through it and through each individual participant in particular, with added blessing and success in your holy work.

I take this opportunity to bring to the attention of the gathering and its participants a central point touching on the foundations of education in purity and holiness—a point requiring swift and complete correction, surprisingly not yet addressed: For several reasons, in the vast majority of yeshivas in this country, students study both sacred subjects and—distinguishing between sacred and secular—secular subjects within the yeshiva walls, at least until a certain age. Without entering into the core issue here, this is a reality that cannot be ignored.

Considering that students are at an impressionable age—affected by every detail not only directly but also indirectly (and sometimes indirect influence is even stronger)—it is impossible for a student not to be influenced by the attitude they see toward these two domains. Therefore, it is essential that the student sees clear proof that even though both are studied within the yeshiva walls, Torah study—our holy Torah of life—is primary, while secular studies are secondary and vastly inferior in importance.

The problem is that unfortunately—in many or perhaps most yeshivas—indirectly and sometimes even directly, the emphasis is reversed: not only are both considered equal in value but greater importance is given to secular studies. This "greater importance" manifests in various ways: strictness about progress in secular subjects, homework assignments, frequent tests; success in these exams is praised with accolades, prizes, honors—even within yeshiva walls (let alone at home). Externally as well: in textbook design, classrooms, equipment, etc.

This also extends to personal attitudes toward teachers: sometimes preference is shown for those teaching secular subjects—even regarding salary matters. If this attitude came only from laypeople or parents I would remain silent; all the more so since sometimes it comes from administration or principals themselves.

I have already elaborated on this last Purim regarding the great harm caused by overemphasizing secular studies. It is obvious that the main purpose of a yeshiva—whether called "small yeshiva" or simply "yeshiva"—is Torah study. Even if reasons or supposed justifications can be found for some aspects mentioned above, anyone with understanding realizes this attitude undermines educational foundations—the damage cannot be overstated.

Therefore I am prompting this gathering to seriously discuss this critical issue so as to implement immediate improvement and correction; may the merit of the many assist you.

Summary

The Rebbe urges yeshiva leaders to reaffirm Torah study as central within their institutions and warns against practices that elevate secular studies above their proper place. Immediate attention to this issue will strengthen authentic Torah education for future generations.
