To Mr. Gershon David, known as Dr. Cohen
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I received your letter in due time, along with the reprints and the book; thank you for the gift. Due to many preoccupations my reply was delayed—please accept my apologies.
As is customary for a Jew to add his own input, I would like to comment on your article about the subject of the four captives, which I reviewed quickly and in continuation of our conversation on this topic.
On one hand, it is appropriate to begin with praise regarding your insights and theories about the origin of the phrase and tradition of the four captives and its details.
However, after asking your forgiveness, I must say that overall I do not find this idea acceptable. To preface: there is a story about a great Jewish leader who was told something was written in Rambam; he replied "No," adding that it wasn't because he knew every detail of Rambam or every secret was revealed to him, but because if something completely contradicts Rambam's approach it simply could not be found there.
Similarly in our case: your article suggests that the Raavad (author of Sefer HaKabbalah) invented the idea that there were captives—Reb Chanokh and others—who were captured and arrived at various places at once.
From a psychological perspective (and allow me to express myself even more sharply—without any preconceived need to invent something new), this theory does not make sense at all. The reason is simple: there is no doubt that the Raavad was observant of Torah and mitzvos and knew the commandment "Distance yourself from falsehood." He also lived in a time and place not far removed from that of the four captives. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think that he invented their story just to support his own views—and even more so that most of his contemporaries accepted this innovation without question!
I am aware of arguments regarding Sefer HaKabbalah's accuracy about dates and similar matters. But as I believe I mentioned in our conversation: it is possible for someone not to be absolutely precise regarding sources or transmitters, or even make mistakes or adjust dates when describing an event spanning a period—from beginning to end—as we discussed regarding closing of the Talmud or Mishnah. All this does not contradict "Distance yourself from falsehood," since one can consider closing of the Talmud at Rav Ashi's death while another links it to Rabbanan Savoraim because their statements appear in Shas; similarly one could conclude it closed mid-life of Rav Ashi, etc.
But this is entirely different from inventing an event from scratch as you propose in your article; such a thing does not fit a Torah-observant Jew—especially since (as above) Raavad lived about two hundred years later when traditions (and even written records) about these events existed—and descendants of those captives were still alive.
Returning to our discussion about spreading Judaism practically—action is what counts—and referencing what we discussed about "essence," which does not change and is opposite "accidental" according to Jewish philosophers—I hope this will result in practical action. Especially since you have influence over a certain circle—significantly among youth—every positive influence shapes them deeply and helps build Jewish homes.
With honor and blessing.
P.S.: I hope you will continue sending me your publications; thank you in advance. Regarding the check you sent: although when a Jew gives tzedakah through me it's understood I'm happy to serve as an agent for any mitzvah—especially tzedakah which equals all mitzvos—I must point out that tzedakah should be collected from those most wealthy in this area. As for you—even if your material assets are limited—you are certainly wealthier spiritually; therefore I strongly hope you will share these spiritual assets through your activities as above—in fitting content and form—with words coming from the heart—the very essence—which also never changes. As our Sages interpret: "Ani yesheinah v'libi er" (I sleep but my heart is awake)—I sleep in exile but my heart is awake toward Hashem, His Torah, and His mitzvos (see Bava Basra 9a; Zohar III 95a).
