The Rebbe addresses questions about the wording in Kaddish, why the Torah does not mention the twin sisters of the tribes like it does Dina, and why Yehuda married a Canaanite woman. He encourages consulting teachers for such questions and urges diligence in Torah and Chassidus study.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 25th of Kislev, the first night of Chanukah, in which you ask: (a) Regarding the phrase in Kaddish "Kedam Avuhon d'Vashmaya" (before their Father in Heaven) being in third person—seemingly this excludes both the chazan himself and those present. The word "Avuhon" comes as a continuation of what was stated earlier "d'chol Beis Yisrael" (all of the House of Israel), which includes both those present and the shaliach tzibbur. Similarly, in the text of Kaddish d'Rabbanan "min kedam Avuhon d'Vashmaya," it follows after the beginning of that paragraph "al Yisrael," and in general they chose this language (as written in Sefer Avudraham) because it is also the language of our Sages (in Mishnah Rosh Hashanah end of chapter 3 in several places).

(b) Regarding those who say that twin sisters were born with the tribes—why does the Torah not mention them as it mentions Dina? In our Torah only what is necessary for us to know is written; as with Dina, there is an extended story about her in our Torah.

(c) Why did Yehuda not marry one of the tribes’ twin sisters but instead a Canaanite woman? Rashi already explained that "Canaanite" here means a merchant, based on a statement from Gemara Pesachim (50a). See also Likkutei Sichos vol. 5 p. 263 note 34.

It is surprising that you write questions from overseas when you are learning in yeshivah and should turn to your teachers and mentors who will answer you. Since everything happens by Divine Providence, I hope this letter will inspire you to increase diligence and perseverance in Torah study and also to set fixed times for learning Chassidus. The Tzeirei Chabad in our camp nine and in Eretz HaKodesh generally can also advise you on an appropriate study schedule and method for you.

With blessing for good news.
