Shalom u'Vrachah!
I was pleased to receive your letter from Tu BiShvat, the New Year for Trees. It is well known what is brought in several works of derush regarding the spiritual awakening of this day, which is based on the verse expression: "Ki haAdam etz hasadeh" (for man is a tree of the field). When a person attains spiritual health, physical health follows naturally. For Jews are "a singular nation in the land," so everywhere they are led by the idea of oneness, which includes the general unification of physicality with spirituality, body and soul.
This is also one of the explanations of the Baal Shem Tov's approach: to serve Hashem Yisbarach with joy through the body—not by afflicting the body but specifically with its assistance. We see this even with our own eyes: when the body is healthy—of course in a Jewish way, through kosher foods etc.—it does not hinder Torah study or mitzvah observance if one truly wishes to do so.
According to the well-known saying of our Sages—to make peace between body and soul, and within the soul itself between the G‑dly soul and animal soul—one thereby arouses and draws down peace around oneself in both close and distant surroundings, thus also bringing peace into the world. This too is a preparation for that general peace about which Yeshayahu prophesied: "Lo yisa goy el goy cherev velo yilmedu od milchamah" (Nation shall not lift sword against nation nor shall they learn war anymore) (Yeshayahu 2:4)...
With blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true Jewish unity means harmonizing body and soul; spiritual health brings physical well-being. Serving Hashem with joy through one's body creates inner peace that radiates outward, preparing for universal harmony as foretold by Yeshayahu.
