Shalom u'Vrachah! [Spring 5702] Introduction: It has been customary since ancient times that at certain known intervals, especially at the beginning and end of the "zman" (term), yeshiva students gather—together with former students or acquaintances and friends from other yeshivas—and invite one of the mashpi'im or ramim, or someone suitable, to speak before them about topics in the tractate they are studying. This could be in terms of logic or pilpul (analytical debate), or in terms of remez (allusion) and derush (homiletics), or about matters of service to G‑d based on foundations taken from books and teachers. Naturally, not all talks and times are alike. The talks may be lengthy or brief, deep or broadly explained, depending on the general understanding of those gathered and their accustomed approach—whether pilpul, logic, remez, derush, etc.—in particular.

As we now come to publish—at the request of many students—some of these talks, we have chosen as a beginning the following talk for several reasons. A) It is at the start of Tractate Bava Metzia since this tractate is studied in several yeshivas during this "zman." B) The talk explains an entire sugya (topic) and its study in terms of life-of-the-soul matters; this approach is still new to most students even though it is actually an ancient method for interpreting Torah concepts as they relate to one's inner life—as is evident from many Midrashim and works by great Jewish sages. See also Mishneh Torah Hilchos Teshuvah 3:4 and end of Hilchos Mikvaos. C) It is a talk in which, according to the state of those gathered at that time, all matters were explained in a way understandable even to beginners on this path—even those encountering concepts like "life-of-the-soul" for the first time.

We pray that each yeshiva student will make a true personal reckoning regarding both the dire state of the Jewish people as a whole and his own situation in particular. As our Sages said (Kiddushin 40b) and see Hilchos Teshuvah 3:4: One should see himself as if he and all the world are half meritorious and half guilty; if he commits one sin he tips himself and all creation toward guilt and causes destruction; if he does one mitzvah he tips himself and all creation toward merit and brings salvation for himself and others. Therefore, let him begin to engage—with proper attention—in studying Chovos HaLevavos (Duties of the Heart).

It is well known that there are six mitzvos whose obligation applies to every person at all times and everywhere—and all are duties of the heart: To believe in Him; not to believe in any other; to unify Him; to love Him; to fear Him; not to stray after one's heart or eyes.

May we soon merit the fulfillment of what is written (Yechezkel 36): "And I will take you from among the nations... I will sprinkle pure water upon you... I will give you a new heart... I will put My spirit within you... You shall be My people, and I will be your G‑d."

With blessings for immediate teshuvah (return) and immediate redemption.
