Shalom u'Vrachah!
After a pause, your letter from the 17th of Elul was received, in which you outline your current studies as well as your state of mind. You write whether you can be a vessel for G‑dliness, etc., to fulfill what is written: nullify your will before His will, serve Hashem with joy, etc.
It is astonishing that you ask about something so simple, for all of the above are fundamental and essential principles of our holy Torah—which is a Torah of life—and certainly you are connected to all of this and obligated in it. The matter depends only on willpower, as it is written: U'vacharta ba'Chayim ("And you shall choose life").
However, like all commandments in the Torah, they are also stated as promises for the future: "He who comes to purify himself is assisted," and we have been assured that "no one will be banished from Him." Moreover, even when a person sanctifies himself just a little from below, he is sanctified greatly from Above.
These days are especially suited for significant change in all the above matters since they are days of mercy and favor. As explained at length by our master the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, the King (the King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He) is in the field and receives everyone with a pleasant countenance (see Likkutei Torah D"H Ani L'Dodi 32b; see there at length).
With blessings for good tidings and for being inscribed and sealed for good.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that becoming a vessel for G‑dliness and serving with joy are within everyone's reach—especially during Elul when Hashem welcomes us openly. The key is sincere desire; even small efforts below draw great assistance from Above.
