Guidance on Uniting Two Synagogues in Tel Aviv

The Rebbe addresses the question of uniting two synagogues in Tel Aviv, suggesting the ideal approach is for energetic individuals to develop both institutions. If that's not possible, he recommends practical cooperation and emphasizes that having two minyanim or diverse congregants is not a drawback.

Vaad of the Congregants of the Nachalat Binyamin Synagogue in Tel Aviv, in our holy land may it be rebuilt and established by our righteous Moshiach speedily in our days, may Hashem be upon them for life.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from 12 Nissan which was received recently, in which you write the reasons for both sides regarding the question of uniting the two synagogues on Nachalat Binyamin Street and HaRav Kook Street, and you ask my opinion on this.

As with many matters, there is an ideal approach and a possible approach. Since everyone should judge their fellow favorably, perhaps the ideal approach described below will also be possible; therefore I will write about it as well.

a) The best would be to recruit among Anash in Tel Aviv several energetic and active individuals who would each take responsibility—some for developing one synagogue and some for developing the other. Of course, this should not be done through meetings among themselves or discussions in theory but through concrete actions: increasing the number of worshippers, lessons learned in each synagogue, etc. All the more so if during this time new synagogues have been established; certainly those already existing have full potential for development. Especially since my father-in-law, the Rebbe, leader of Israel, strongly encourages success in such activities. Here too the emphasis is on action—as the saying goes: one deed is better than a thousand sighs. Certainly both synagogues have a right to exist—a true existence; that is, a living existence characterized by growth and development both quantitatively and qualitatively.

b) If according to current practice no one has taken responsibility for strengthening these synagogues for whatever reason—and thus there is concern that things will continue as before (i.e., the first possibility will not materialize)—then at least they should gather with representatives of the second synagogue and devise a plan to achieve at least some improvement.

c) If two minyanim are held—one earlier and one later—I do not see any deficiency or objection to this (as I wrote previously to Mr. Shemerling). Nor do I see any objection if some worshippers are from among Sephardic Jews, provided that the prayer follows Nusach Chabad—the rite of our Rebbeim.

With respect and blessing for good news. And as per the saying: see also above volume 18 letter 6592 and those referenced there.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that practical action and unity can strengthen community institutions. Even when ideal solutions are difficult, cooperation and inclusivity—while maintaining core traditions—lead to genuine growth and vitality.
