Haraha"ch iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z Menachem Zev HaLevi

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 21st of Shevat... I hope you will find suitable words to explain the directive of our Sages: 'When Adar enters, we increase in joy,' for a Torah command also grants the power to fulfill it fully—matters of joy and heartfelt feeling—and that there is reason to be joyful, even to the point that it is truly felt in the heart.

You wrote about the students who were here and regarding the farbrengen of Yud Shevat, and asked how to bring about nachas ruach (satisfaction) and delight. I must say I did not imagine that this would need to be asked from another country across the border, when this is precisely the content of Torah and mitzvos. Especially according to what is explained and illuminated in Chassidus—the point being that there is no good except Torah; more specifically, true good is good for Heaven, good for people, and good that produces fruit. All three aspects are necessary. Further explanation is given based on the discourse 'Pnimiyus Abba Pnimiyus Atik,' that the inner pleasure itself becomes inner wisdom—this is within pnimiyus haTorah (the inner dimension of Torah), understanding and comprehension even up to the intellect of nefesh habehamis (the animal soul), especially as these are secrets within secrets of Torah.

As explained, pleasure is the opposite and transformation of pain—specifically in our generation before Moshiach's coming (ikvesa d'Meshicha), and specifically through practical action and kabbalas ol (acceptance of the yoke), true pleasure applies until we reach the blessed time of simple pleasure untainted by any other matter—the Shabbos and rest for the Living One of all worlds.

Regarding Tomchei Temimim students especially: first and foremost—precise observance of yeshiva schedules, with extra effort during their free time. It is obvious—and must be—that this should not harm bodily health; having a healthy body is itself a path in serving Hashem. There should also be enough free time afterward to engage in spreading the wellsprings outward—not only one's own 'outside,' but also literally outward.

May it be G‑d's will that you explain and influence all the above to those who asked you about these matters, as well as those who will ask you in future—and even those who ought to have asked but are held back by their own assumptions.

Blessings for good news in both personal and communal matters together—as above, in a manner of increasing joy.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that increasing joy in Adar comes with Divine empowerment. True pleasure stems from Torah lived with depth and shared outwardly; maintaining order, health, and outreach brings satisfaction both personally and communally.
