Avoiding Arguments During Outreach Visits

The Rebbe writes to advise against engaging in arguments during outreach visits, emphasizing that time is limited and debates often lead to stubbornness rather than understanding. Instead, he encourages sharing perspectives pleasantly and finding ways to avoid confrontations.

Havavac"h iy"a nu"n his work is the work of Heaven and a man of energy etc. Shmuel

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 29th of Shevat. At an auspicious time, you will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzukal-leha nabgam zya, in accordance with the content of your letter.

Thank you very much for your writing, especially regarding the results of the visits, etc. It is clear that it is not worthwhile at all to enter into arguments. Besides being a waste of time—since the time for your visits is limited compared to what needs to be conveyed and said—it is evident that most often arguments inevitably arouse a sense of competitiveness that can mislead a person even regarding his own interests and even concerning his relationship with his Creator, G‑d forbid.

The purpose of your visits is not debate or anything similar but rather to tell and explain clearly your perspective in pleasant ways and certainly in peaceful ways. Of course, there is difficulty in this matter so as not to leave an impression on those asking questions that one is avoiding debate due to weakness of position or perspective or because there is nothing to answer, etc.

However, since you already have experience from your visits in various places, surely you can find a style that leaves no room at all for such impressions. And if debate becomes absolutely necessary, it should and can be minimized as much as possible.

May it be G‑d's will that as we find ourselves in the month of Adar—when "the people of the land became Jews," how much more so regarding the concealments among Jews themselves—when all boundaries are broken down naturally, "truth will sprout from the earth," it will break through and flourish.

Blessings for good news in all the above matters with joy and gladness of heart; since we are commanded to increase in joy, this commandment itself gives us strength.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that outreach should focus on sharing perspectives peacefully rather than engaging in arguments. Even when challenged, one should avoid debates whenever possible and instead communicate with clarity and positivity.
