Haraha"g vavac"h iy"a nu"n oseik b-tzt"z Shalom Rabkin

Shalom u'Vrachah!

After a pause I received your letter from Motzaei Shabbat along with its enclosure. And since today is the eve of Rosh Chodesh, when joy is increased, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal I mentioned his son for a complete recovery. May it be G‑d's will that together with his wife they raise him and all their children to Torah, marriage, and good deeds.

I read with pleasure about your activities; however, in line with the saying of our Rebbeim—whose sayings are also Torah—“Good is good and better is better,” I am quoting the verse: 'Shimoni noterah et haKramim Karmi sheli lo natarti' (They made me keeper of the vineyards; my own vineyard I have not kept), meaning that even though Torah says one must guard a vineyard (i.e., communal responsibilities), it does not compare to guarding one's own vineyard (personal obligations).

As explained many times—even in revealed Torah and down to practical halachah—there is a great difference here: The ruling is that even all matters of Heaven (mitzvos) do not compare to one word of Torah study. But in a mitzvah that cannot be done by others (one's own vineyard), not only do they compare (see Moed Katan 9a end), but one even suspends Torah study to perform the mitzvah (see Rashi and Tosafot there).

Of course my intention here is regarding Chassidus—its teachings, guidance, and practices—and since we are commanded in this matter there is certainly full ability to fulfill it. For Hashem does not come with unreasonable demands upon His creations; it depends only on will.

Regarding your question about Rambam and Kabbalah—see Sefer HaSichos summer 5700 page 41 and its note.

Regarding your question about saying 'Selach Lanu': although I have not heard directly about this matter, from its nature it seems to depend only on when 'Selach Lanu' is recited—not what happens afterward.

Blessings for good news in all mentioned above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that while communal obligations are important, one's personal spiritual growth—especially through Torah study and Chassidus—takes precedence when both cannot be fulfilled simultaneously. Fulfilling personal mitzvahs empowers broader communal impact.
