מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו, בו כותב סדר השתל' הענינים בהנוגע להרבנות ראשית, ומכתבי בזה.
וכיון שהיו במכ"ע ידיעות סותרות בדברי, וכפי המכתבים שמקבל הנני כאן, אצל כו"כ אין ברורה עמדתי ע"ע -
לדעתי מהנכון לפרסם עכ"פ קטע ממכתבי - למען הסיר הספיקות.
[דא"ג ובהמשך להנ"ל: ביקרוני ימים אלו מראשי המד"ל ושוחחנו, כמובן, גם בשייכות להנ"ל לברר העמדה וכו'. ולצערי, כנראה שכמה מהם עדיין מבכרים רווחים מפלגתיים מסופקים ע"ח כבוד הרבנות ראשית. ונצלתי ההזדמנות לחזור על עמדתי במכתבי, ובהוספה ובהקדמה,
שהריוח המפלגתי שמשערים - ספק גדול אם ישיגוהו, כי כנראה אין מעריכים המצב הפוליטי ויחס הכחות, כמו שנראים הם מבחוץ, והתפתחות הענינים לאחרונה, הביאה עוד חשש ההולך וגדל, שבאם יודחה זמן הבחירות, תתחזק הלוך והוסיף דעת והשפעת אלו הרוצים להפריד בין הדת והמדינה,
אשר לדעתי זהו נגד עיקרי האמונה, כי אי אפשר לאיזה ענין שיהי' לבני ישראל, שיהי' מופרד מאמונתנו ודתנו, עאכו"כ לעשות זה באופן רשמי.
ופשיטא שבהנוגע להמד"ל, אז תאבד המפלגה בכלל זכות קיומה. ולתמהוני עלי להוסיף, אף שכמובן זה לא אמרתי להם, שכנראה שגם חשש זה אין רואים אותו!]
דא"ג - כמדומה שגם במכתבי כתבתי, שאף שאין דעתי נוחה משקו"ט במכ"ע, הדגשתי בפירוש, שאין זה שולל גילוי דעת ברורה, מבלי להכנס בשקו"ט.
עוד נקודה הובלטה בשיחתנו האמורה, שאף שרבנות ראשית אין מרותה מתקבלת אצל כו"כ חוגים, בד"א להמרות ופסקי דינים, אבל השמצה ובזיון שלה - ה"ה מנוצלים להפחית העמדה של כל עניני דת ובאיזה חוג שיהי', וק"ל.

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter, in which you write about the order of developments regarding the Chief Rabbinate, and my letter on this matter. Since there have been contradictory reports in the newspapers about my words, and based on the letters I receive here, it seems that for many my position is still unclear—for this reason I think it appropriate to publish at least an excerpt from my letter, in order to remove any doubts.
[Incidentally, and as a continuation of the above: In recent days I was visited by leaders of the Medinat Leumi party and we discussed, naturally, also matters related to the above to clarify my position, etc. Unfortunately, it seems that some of them still prefer uncertain party gains at the expense of the honor of the Chief Rabbinate. I took the opportunity to reiterate my position as stated in my letter, adding and emphasizing that the party gain they anticipate is highly doubtful—apparently they do not properly assess the political situation and balance of power as seen from outside. The recent developments have brought an increasing concern that if the election date is postponed, those who wish to separate religion from state will only grow stronger in influence. In my opinion this is against fundamental principles of faith, since it is impossible for any matter relating to Jews to be separated from our faith and religion—certainly not to make such a separation official. And obviously regarding Medinat Leumi itself—the party would lose its very right to exist. To my astonishment I must add (though naturally I did not say this to them) that apparently even this concern is not being recognized!]
Incidentally—it seems that I also wrote in my letter that although I am not pleased with debates in newspapers, I explicitly emphasized that this does not preclude a clear public statement without entering into debate.
Another point highlighted in our aforementioned conversation: Even though the authority of the Chief Rabbinate is not accepted by many circles regarding rulings and decisions, nevertheless when it comes to slander or disparagement against it—these are exploited to diminish respect for all matters of religion in any circle whatsoever—and this is clear.
