במענה למכתבו מיום הראשון דסליחות, בו כותב אודות הרצון לעשות תשובה, ואיך להביא לפועל, והרי כמה ענינים ישנם שמבלבלים.
ויתבונן היטב הדק היטב במ"ש רבנו הזקן [בעל התניא - פוסק בנסתר
דתורה - והשו"ע - פוסק בנגלה דתורה] - בספרו תניא קדישא ריש פרק מא, ומה טוב שילמוד בעל פה מהתחלת הפרק עד לעמוד שני, תיבת המלך, וידוע דרז"ל הלואי שיהי' מורא שמים עליכם כמורא בשר ודם (שם בתניא דף נ"ז ע"א). כן יתבונן מענינא דימים אלו שילמדם באגרת התשובה לרבנו הזקן ועוד, ותקותי שיחליט בתוקף שעליו בתוככי כלל ישראל לשוב אל ה' אלקינו, ובפרט בימים אלו שההמשכה היא על כל השנה כולה הנה הרוצה לטהר מסייעין לו ביותר, ומוסגר בזה מכתבי כללי לראש השנה שגם בו מדובר בענין האמור אף שלא בנקודה זו.
בעת רצון יזכירוהו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע להמצטרך לו.

In response to your letter from the first day of Selichos, in which you write about your desire to do teshuvah and how to bring it into action, yet there are many things that distract you.
Reflect deeply and carefully on what our master the Alter Rebbe [author of Tanya—the halachic authority in the hidden dimension of Torah—and Shulchan Aruch—the halachic authority in the revealed dimension of Torah] writes in his holy book Tanya at the beginning of chapter 41. It is best if you learn by heart from the start of the chapter until the words "haMelech" (the king) on page two. It is known what our Sages said: "If only the fear of Heaven would be upon you as the fear of flesh and blood" (see Tanya, page 57a).
Also reflect on matters relevant to these days as taught by the Alter Rebbe in Igeres HaTeshuvah and more. I hope you will make a strong decision that you, together with all Israel, must return to Hashem our G‑d—especially in these days when this influence extends over the entire year. One who wishes to purify himself is helped even more now. Enclosed is my general letter for Rosh Hashanah which also discusses this topic, though not at this specific point.
At an auspicious time you will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, for all your needs.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that overcoming distractions in teshuvah requires deep reflection on Tanya and utilizing the special spiritual energy of these days. A firm decision to return to Hashem brings extra help from Above.
