Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from 6/14, in which you write about your sons who are not behaving according to the way of Torah, and therefore you began to fast, and you ask my opinion on this.

As explained in Chassidic texts, you should substitute fasting with giving tzedakah. It would be very appropriate to find friends and acquaintances who will speak with your sons regarding Torah study and mitzvah observance. They should speak not just once but several times—at first gently but with the necessary firmness—and their words should come from the heart, for then they will enter the listener's heart.

It is proper to have the tefillin of the men obligated in tefillin checked, as well as the mezuzot in your home to ensure they are all kosher according to halachah. Also, you should maintain the good custom of Jewish women to set aside tzedakah before lighting candles every Friday afternoon and before every Yom Tov.

Blessings for good news.

In the name of the Rebbe Shlita, Mazkir

P.S. When you inform me of the names you wrote about in Hebrew along with their mothers' names (as is customary when mentioning names in prayer), they will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal for what they need. In my secretariat we do not write French; therefore this response comes in Hebrew, but you may also write in French since I can read that language. Ask your community rabbi whether you require permission regarding the above-mentioned fasting.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that concern for children's spiritual path should be met with practical steps—substituting fasting with tzedakah, enlisting supportive friends, ensuring kosher tefillin and mezuzot, and maintaining positive customs—while seeking rabbinic guidance when needed.
