Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter asking for further explanation of my letter from the end of last year: It is clear that my intention in my previous answer was not to encourage merely habitual service of iskafya (self-restraint) and nothing more. What I wrote about continuing in the kibbutz was based on your statement that you do not have a profession. In connection with my clear opinion that it is desirable for you to arrange a good shidduch both materially and spiritually, being in the kibbutz will certainly allow you to arrange your work so you can learn a profession. Surely the kibbutz administration is also interested in the benefit of its members. Also (at least at first), the issue of housing is resolved, etc. Based on this, it is also understood that my instruction was not meant as guidance for several years but only until you have a profession and get married at an auspicious time. Afterward, you and your wife will decide together how and where to continue.
Another point: It seems from your conduct and letter that you are not yet accustomed to regular daily work. This is a very important matter for proper living—to be master over your spirit and engage in what is desirable, not just what one wants or whatever is new each morning. This should be understood.
Regarding what you wrote—that you cannot immediately engage in shidduchim because your spiritual state is not as it should be—my hope is that the very act of entering life as commanded by our holy Torah will make it easier for you to battle the yetzer (inclination) and improve in all areas about which you write. This has been seen clearly with many people in past years and even nowadays.
Regarding your statement that efforts in shidduchim must be such-and-such: The intention is simple—unfortunately, in some circles people have permitted themselves things that are absolutely undesirable under the pretense of searching for an appropriate match. In Eretz Yisrael many shidduchim are concluded with the desired modesty and bring happiness both materially and spiritually; this was my intent.
As for your question about how to engage in spreading Chabad teachings when you have not yet perfected yourself—the answer has two parts: One cannot withhold Torah knowledge from those around him just because he himself is lacking; they are not at fault for this. Additionally, if one has not fully corrected himself yet still refrains from spreading Chassidus, this only adds deficiency to deficiency. Given how great this dissemination is (as stated in Mishnah: "He merited and caused the public to merit...the merit of the public depends on him"), the opposite must be true—G‑d forbid to refrain! In working on perfecting oneself, one should seek every possible means to increase success; knowing he must soon speak about important matters before many people will certainly make his inner struggle easier and bring victory closer.
May it be G‑d's will that as we approach Chanukah—which represents delivering the wicked into the hands of the righteous and evildoers into the hands of those who study Your Torah—so too in each person's personal battle may evil be delivered into the hands of righteousness as explained in Tanya.
Blessings for good news regarding all mentioned above without delay—and for a bright and joyous Chanukah.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that one should pursue both material stability and spiritual growth simultaneously—acquiring a profession while preparing for marriage—and continue spreading Chabad teachings even before achieving personal perfection.
