Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from Erev Shabbos Kodesh, in which you write about what you have experienced and your current way of life, concluding with a detailed list of certain problems.
a) At times you feel apathy in spiritual matters, even to the point of battling the yetzer (inclination), etc. It is well known from our Sages that one should not let his heart fall due to such occurrences; these matters are explained in many places. See also in Sefer Tanya Kadisha at the references listed in its index at the end—among them chapter 27.
b) How to repel unwanted thoughts. In general, the advice is through distraction [not by fighting the thought directly—which requires analysis as it is the opposite of distraction], but since thought is always wandering, distraction is achieved by occupying the mind with something entirely different—ideally something of Torah and mitzvah. If a little light pushes away much darkness, how much more so does much light.
c) Beginning and order in rectifying one's character traits (middos). It is understood that one cannot set fixed rules here since much depends on each person's nature and everyone’s opinions differ; therefore consult with elder Anash (Chassidim) in your area who know you or detail your situation to them so they can guide you. A general point in this rectification is to proceed step by step from level to level—not by skipping or jumping ahead, which only applies as a temporary measure for certain times. Of course these words refer only to additional stringencies and separations in this area; for what is forbidden remains forbidden and one must not wait until reaching a level where he understands the prohibition etc.—so not only is skipping ahead not appropriate here but rather one must uproot oneself entirely from the first place to a new place; and it is clear how distant these places are from each other. As explained in Tanya: One who transgresses even a minor Rabbinic detail becomes bound by the external forces (G‑d forbid), while one who guards even a minor Rabbinic detail thereby connects and unites with Ein Sof blessed be He—see there.
d) Regarding whether to change your place of residence—and where. The decision depends on many details; regarding residence especially important is your wife's opinion (may she live), for she is called akeres habayis (mainstay of the home). The merit of your involvement in spreading Judaism in your area—as you write about it and will surely increase further since it is necessary and demanded at this time—will help bring increased blessings from Hashem for all you and your family need.
With blessings for being inscribed and sealed for good and for good news regarding all the above.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that overcoming spiritual struggles requires practical strategies: distract from negative thoughts with Torah matters, improve character step by step while consulting trusted mentors, uphold all prohibitions strictly, value one's spouse's input on major decisions, and continue spreading Judaism.
