* * *

* * *

* * *

Shalom u'Vrachah!

To the sons and daughters of Israel in every place — may Hashem be upon you for life — abundant peace and blessing!

These current days, the end of the old year and standing at the beginning of the new year that is coming upon us and all Israel for good and blessing, are a time for soul-accounting regarding the past year. In accordance with this accounting's sum total, one should accept proper resolutions for the new year. The accounting can only be correct if one's assessment of their own abilities and possibilities is also accurate. The greater one's potential that was not utilized, the greater is the regret, the transgression of not using them, and all the stronger must be one's resolve — from now on — to use these abilities to their fullest extent.

The period before Rosh Hashanah and Rosh Hashanah itself is not only an opportunity that demands a general soul-accounting but also reminds and demands a deep inner appreciation of one's own extraordinary powers possessed as a human being — the choicest of creations — and as a Jew whom the Creator has given His G‑dly Torah of Life. For Rosh Hashanah is the day when man was created.

When man was created, immediately his Creator showed him what his powers are and what his mission in this world is: 'Mile'u es ha'aretz u'kivshuha urdu b'dgas hayam u've'of hashamayim u'vechol chayah haromeses al ha'aretz' (Fill up the earth and conquer it; rule over the fish of the sea, over the birds of heaven, and over every living thing that moves on earth). Man was given powers to conquer and rule over all creation — on land, sea, and air — and he was told that this is his task.

What is the way to world mastery? What is its purpose? Our Sages tell us: When Hashem created Adam HaRishon (the first man), his soul — tzelem Elokim (the Divine image) — permeated him completely; through this he ruled over all creation. All creatures gathered to crown him as their creator. Adam HaRishon corrected them: 'Bo'u nishtachaveh lifnei Hashem oseinu' (Let us all bow down before Hashem our Maker).

The world mastery given to man as his mission is to elevate his surroundings — all creatures including animals — for true humanity: humanity permeated with tzelem Elokim (the Divine image), with a soul that is truly a part of G‑d above. This brings all creation to recognize 'Hashem oseinu' (Hashem our Maker).

Obviously, before one can master the world he must first master himself — subdue his earthly/material nature. This is achieved by following Torah's instructions — Torah Chaim (Torah of Life), which guides daily living so that materiality becomes permeated with light from 'Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad' (Hashem our G‑d, Hashem is One).

The Creator made one person and gave this single individual this lofty mission. Here lies a profound but clear message: one person — every person — has it within their power to "master the world." If someone does not fulfill their mission or use their priceless G‑dly powers, it is not only a personal loss or failure but affects the destiny of the entire world.

In these days of soul-accounting when each person reflects that by following Hashem's instructions in His Torah they have potential to conquer worlds, everyone should ask themselves how much they did in this direction during the past year — which is their divine mission and life's purpose — what they neglected or failed in, and accept proper resolutions for improvement in the new year.

And Hashem Who sees into hearts will see your firmness in these good resolutions and will grant His blessing so you can fulfill them fully — with joy and gladness of heart; with abundance both materially and spiritually.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that each person possesses unique G‑d-given strengths enabling them to impact all creation. Through honest self-reflection during Elul and resolute commitment for growth in Rosh Hashanah’s spirit, we fulfill our divine mission to transform ourselves—and ultimately—the entire world.
