B"H, 23 Menachem Av, 5719. Brooklyn.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from Tuesday, which is doubly good. As you requested, your son shlita will once again be mentioned at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, in accordance with your letter's content.

As I believe I have written before, the root and source from which one is hewn helps both bodily and spiritual health together. It is well known, as the Baal Shem Tov said on the verse 'Ki Tireh Chamor... Azov Ta'azov Imo' (If you see a donkey... you shall surely help with him) (printed in Hayom Yom, 28 Shevat 5703).

On another note and regarding the opening of your letter about two hundred years since the passing and yahrzeit of the Baal Shem Tov: it is clearly very proper that there should be a great awakening to spread the wellsprings of his Torah and that of his students and their students—which are all one. As is known from the Baal Shem Tov's famous letter about his question 'When will the Master come?' and the answer: 'When your wellsprings spread outward.' The emphasis here is on every detail: specifically until they reach outward, specifically in a manner of spreading; not just explanations or philosophical ideas but the actual wellsprings themselves. This is unlike those who mistakenly think that to fulfill this spreading it is necessary to translate these teachings into concepts from secular wisdoms—G‑d forbid—and specifically dress them in terms and ideas of nature while denying miracles and their possibility, or denying any connection between Torah and mitzvos as practical commandments.

It is also clear even to one's animal soul that compromises can exist in many ways—and certainly falsehood—but truth includes only one [even though it can be reached by many paths: through Chabad (intellect), Chagat (emotion), or Nehi (action) within one's limbs; but ultimately it is necessary] that Torah and mitzvah penetrate all faculties of the soul—both spiritual and physical limbs—from intellect down to action, from head to foot—including even pleasure and will. Even though progress toward holiness and goodness is commanded in our Torah as 'little by little.'

I hope, according to your letter, that you will use your influence as described above—in other words, for guidance in truth: that Chassidus is a complete Torah—not just an abstract philosophical study or lectures—but also relates to conduct even on weekdays. However, since people have different mindsets, there are those whose first discussion must be about matters of 'the foot' (action), some about emotion, some about intellect. Certainly for someone like yourself this elaboration is unnecessary.

With honor and blessing for good news in all mentioned above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that spreading Chassidus means sharing its authentic essence—not diluting it into foreign philosophies—and guiding each person according to their unique path so that Torah permeates every aspect of life.
