To the administration of Beit Midrash for Teachers, Beit Rivka, and the Beit Rivka School in France — may Hashem be upon them for life. Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 3rd of Menachem Av with its attachment — the curriculum plan for the first academic year of the Beit Midrash for Teachers. I enjoyed reading the details of the program, and where necessary — if needed — a letter from the Melach will follow.

What I wish to add is that certainly even on Erev Shabbat Kodesh, when studies begin today with holy subjects in addition to prayer, at least a few moments should be dedicated especially to matters connected to this day — that is, the weekly Torah portion. As discussed in Shulchan Aruch, on this day one should read twice from the Torah and once from Targum; similarly, these weeks are about providing students with provisions for their journey — meaning for vacation days. On the contrary, these months [especially Tishrei] require increased attention to all matters of Judaism — our Torah and its mitzvot — since they are filled with many laws and customs beyond those of the rest of the year. Accordingly, it would be worthwhile to find a suitable framework that does not interfere with vacation but still fills these days as described above — out of their own goodwill rather than compulsion by school or seminary. It is evident that these months are especially favorable times for absorbing matters of Judaism; this is also logical since learning is accompanied by practical observance related to upcoming holidays and their influence is felt throughout the year.

Also in essence: every festival and holiday is general for the entire year in its themes; Rosh Hashanah relates to accepting the yoke of Heaven's sovereignty; Yom Kippur — repentance; Sukkot — joy in mitzvah observance; etc.

In general regarding textbooks where there is doubt: such doubts should be ruled stringently because we are dealing with youth education where even a small deficiency must be avoided all the more so. It is well known that a small crack in a seed can ruin an entire tree's growth G‑d forbid. Regarding what was mentioned above: one cannot permit use of a book composed by several authors without mentioning their names if only a few points are collected from it; but a complete book by a specific author constitutes giving approval to all its content.

During Bein HaMetzarim (the Three Weeks), about which our sages said (Shabbat 119b) "Jerusalem was destroyed only because they neglected children's Torah study," everyone should increase their efforts in correcting this by adding extra effort in pure Jewish education for Jewish children. Obviously girls' education is included [as cited by halachic authorities including Hilchot Talmud Torah by Rabbeinu HaZaken at end ch. 1: women too must learn relevant laws etc., all positive commandments not time-bound and all negative commandments]. This will also hasten fulfillment of the prophecy that these days will be transformed into joy and gladness, fulfilling the promise of an inheritance without boundaries.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that Jewish education must continue even during vacation periods, with special care taken in selecting appropriate books and curricula. Both boys' and girls' education are vital for transforming challenging times into joy through increased dedication to Torah values.
