Shalom u'Vrachah!

In a separate package you will receive our latest publications, and I hope they will be beneficial to many.

On this occasion, I wish to address one point in your letter regarding your statement: "I am not influential in any way. In our circle there is no power of influence," etc.

It is known that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, would say in such cases that just as a person must know his own shortcomings—only then can he correct them and live properly—so too must he know his talents, abilities, and virtues. Certainly, especially in these days, there is no need to elaborate with proofs that you are indeed influential; according to my knowledge your influence has brought about an important shift to the right among those you affect. As I have been told, without your intervention certain matters would have turned out most undesirably. Of course I do not know the details, but truth is recognizable.

It is also unnecessary to elaborate on the point that every success in good deeds should certainly lead to increased effort in this direction. As our Sages say: "One who has a maneh desires two hundred"—by adding another maneh; "one who has two hundred desires four hundred"—by adding two portions. And so, with your permission, these are fundamental matters of our faith—we await and yearn for a fundamental change among those you influence.

You write that there is only one way to influence—through increasing Torah study in the hope that its light will bring even those far from it back to good. While the mitzvah of Torah study is equal to all others and its light can indeed bring people back to good, we are neither permitted nor able at this time to stand by and wait for this alone. Especially since those being influenced are themselves influencers within their own circles.

Additionally, we have a clear ruling and instruction in Avos: for one's wisdom (and clearly this refers to Torah wisdom) to endure, one's awe must precede it. When considering the nature of young Jews in America today, it is evident—even more so than those of middle age—that they are ready to accept true views without compromise; on the contrary, any compromise weakens the power of influence.

Certainly here too it is unnecessary to elaborate: "that his awe precedes"—in its plain sense—so that learning leads to practical mitzvos. As the wisest of all men concluded after all investigation: "Es HaElokim yira (Fear G‑d) v'es mitzvosav shmor (and keep His commandments), for this is all of man."

The month of Tammuz is marked for us by its auspicious days—the 12th and 13th—which are the days of redemption of my father-in-law the Rebbe from imprisonment in the Soviet Union. The history of Israel's leaders should serve as living guidance and instruction; the inner point of these days of redemption is that one who truly fights for truth—even with actual self-sacrifice—and especially regarding matters affecting many people—even a single individual can stand up against a mighty regime and even overcome it.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that recognizing both one's strengths and weaknesses enables true growth and effective leadership. Even one sincere individual can make a significant impact when acting with conviction and dedication rooted in Torah values.
