Mr. Yitzchak Damiel

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In continuation of my previous letter in response to the revealed question, I am attaching here a second letter. I rely on your understanding whether to deliver it, and if so—regarding further explanation if needed.

Brooklyn, NY.

In continuation of my previous letter answering your revealed question: "Is there a way for us as skeptics to be convinced of the truth of G‑d's existence—clearly, without any doubts or possibility of doubts?"—I find it necessary to add the following lines for reasons that will be explained.

In my previous response I limited my answer according to the wording of the question—"to be convinced... clearly, without any doubts," etc.—which indicates a desire for an answer based on understanding and comprehension. Naturally, this approach did not satisfy me for two main reasons: (a) In people generally, emotion and the development of inner convictions in the soul are more decisive than conclusions reached through intellect; (b) In a Jew specifically, intellect is only a garment for the soul—as stated by our master the Alter Rebbe (author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch)—and the soul is truly a part of G‑d above; turning directly to the soul—not necessarily through intellect—is more effective. It is evident that in the soul emotion is more active than intellect.

Despite this, I did not want to address this point in my first letter—for the reason mentioned above regarding how you phrased your question—and mainly because I did not want anyone to think that what was written previously was insufficient or could be dismissed intellectually. Therefore I am writing this as a separate follow-up.

It goes without saying—I judge those asking as Jews who, regardless of their intellectual decisions, believe in truth and justice so strongly that they are willing to make sacrifices—even personal ones—for justice and helping others, especially when such help benefits not just individuals but society at large.

Therefore, removing the constraints set by your question's wording, I allow myself to address you personally: From your letter-question I see you are young—or at least still youthful in energy and spirit—and also young in that you have strength to go against majority opinion if you recognize it as necessary and can make radical changes in your life.

Surely you are aware—in considering today's world—of what has happened to our people in recent years during the Holocaust and decrees of destruction when millions were killed during the last war. On the other hand new responsibilities have arisen—some entirely new or previously only present in limited measure.

Another point: confusion of boundaries and mental turmoil have not decreased in our times but rather increased alarmingly—to where darkness is called light and bitterness sweet; with extreme stubbornness thousands are forced to accept darkness as light and bitterness as sweet.

At such a time there is an inner call from every Jew's soul—to stand at the forefront as active participants fulfilling their role not just as personal duty but also filling gaps left by those lost through destruction—actively rejecting value inversions but also spreading our eternal Jewish values with absolute clarity and youthful vigor so each person becomes a spark igniting another's soul flame.

Is this really a time for intellectual debates? Meanwhile days, weeks, months, years are lost—losses that cannot be recovered—and unique opportunities slip away!

If this demand applies to everyone—it applies all the more so to youth; it is clear that among young people words of inspiration from peers have far greater impact than those from elders—and are received more willingly too.

I do not intend here—as noted—to enter into rational proofs about what our eternal Jewish values are or what new responsibilities have arisen. I trust each one will recognize them if they open up Jewish history—which has continued unbroken for thousands of years filled with bloodshed and unprecedented trials—and reflect on it; they will find only one type of value preserved throughout all generations unchanged: Torah life and practical mitzvos in daily living—the eternal Israel does not lie.

May these few lines—in quantity—awaken within them those inner powers found deep within every Jew's soul so they bring them forth ever more strongly. If reward is needed—the greatest reward will surely be inner satisfaction; but certainly the Creator will grant reward also materially according to each one's situation.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that while rational inquiry has its place, true conviction about G‑d and Jewish values comes from within—the enduring faith and mission embedded deep in every Jewish soul. He urges youth especially to channel their energy into living these values actively rather than waiting for intellectual certainty.
