Brachah v'Shalom!
In reply to your letter, in which you write that you have been studying in the seminary for some time, and in spite of this you cannot make friends with the students, and you find yourself alone, which of course affects your mood, etc.:
In general, you should consult your teachers as to which of the students would be more suitable to befriend, and afterwards make an effort to do so.
The general advice for making friendship easier is to reflect that no person is perfect in all virtues, and you too are included in this; that is[1], you too fall short of perfection. Therefore one should not demand, nor be exacting, that one's friends be perfect in all matters and in every detail.
Further, our Sages of blessed memory have testified that "the daughters of Israel are comely"[2], and each one of them is called a daughter of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel and Leah. Surely she has many, many virtues, which in the course of time you will come to recognize; and through the friendship your own perfection too will grow.
And the more you explain this point to yourself, the easier friendship will become, and the loneliness will pass. Our Sages have already taught: "Acquire for yourself a friend"[3].
As to what you write about a shidduch – that several times one was suggested to you, and afterwards it did not come about: since you are to study in the seminary for some time, surely, as the time for completing your studies approaches, G‑d, may He be blessed[4], will provide you with the shidduch that is suited to you.
With blessing for good news[5] and for a kosher and happy Pesach,
In the name of the Rebbe, shlita,
Secretary[6]
P.S.
In my secretariat French is not written, and so the reply comes in the Holy Tongue; but you may continue to write in French as well, since I read this language[7].
Notes
1. That is (ז.א.): ז.א. = זאת אומרת, "that is to say".
2. "The daughters of Israel are comely" (בנות ישראל נאות הן): The Mishnah (Nedarim 9:10) and Gemara (Nedarim 66a) tell of a man who vowed to derive no benefit from his sister's daughter; she was brought to R. Yishmael's house and made beautiful, and R. Yishmael released the vow: באותה שעה בכה ר' ישמעאל ואמר: בנות ישראל נאות הן, אלא שהעניות מנוולתן, "At that moment R. Yishmael wept and said: The daughters of Israel are comely, but poverty makes them unsightly." Every daughter of Israel is comely in her own right.
3. "Acquire for yourself a friend" (קנה לך חבר): The Mishnah (Avos 1:6): "Yehoshua ben Perachyah says: Make for yourself a teacher, acquire for yourself a friend, and judge every person favorably." The Bartenura there: וקנה לך חבר – ואפילו אתה צריך לקנותו בדמים יקרים ולפזר עליו ממון כדי שתקנה אהבתו, "Acquire for yourself a friend – even if you must buy him at a high price and spend money on him to acquire his love." A friend must be "acquired", with effort and by giving way, not waited for.
4. G‑d, may He be blessed (השי"ת): במ"ש = במה שכתבה, "as to what you write"; השי"ת = השם יתברך, "G‑d, may He be blessed".
5. Good news (בשו"ט): בשו"ט = בשורות טובות, "good news".
6. In the name of the Rebbe… The letter was signed by the secretary in the Rebbe's name.
7. Since I read this language (כיון שקורא הנני שפה זו): The recipient had written to the Rebbe in French. The postscript is in the Rebbe's own voice ("my secretariat"; "I read this language"): no one in the secretariat writes French, so the reply was written in Hebrew; but the Rebbe himself reads French, so she may continue to write in it.
Summary
A seminary student who cannot make friends and feels lonely is advised to ask her teachers which classmates would suit her and to make the effort. No one is perfect – including herself – so she should not demand perfection of her friends; every daughter of Israel has many virtues, and "acquire for yourself a friend". As for the shidduch suggestions that did not materialize, G‑d will send the right match as her studies draw to a close.
