Shalom u'Vrachah!
Following our conversation and your remarks in the introduction to your book Matzevet Zikaron which you are publishing, in addition to what has already been explained about the benefits of such a work—by great Jewish leaders who authored Seder HaDorot and memorial books—there is a special importance to books of this type in our era, an unparalleled time of confusion, with bewilderment arising in various ways, especially through the distortion of events from previous days, even from the most recent years. In particular, within the camp of those who fear Hashem, there has not been enough effort for various reasons (which are not for now) in recording and describing the history of our people and its true leaders. As a result, there is a widespread assumption that the stories and descriptions found in secular books are entirely accurate, etc. The same applies regarding the true leaders and heroes of Israel—who is truly mighty? One who conquers his inclination—from whom true strength in all matters flows. There are very few descriptions of the Nesi'im (leaders) and great men of Israel from previous generations, especially full and accurate portrayals.
This is why it is doubly beneficial that the younger generation—and even those already advanced in years—should know and also tell their children about the leaders of Israel who stood guard and gave their lives for matters concerning their communities and all Jews both spiritually and materially. This is particularly emphasized in the history of Chassidim and their Nesi'im up to the founder of general Chassidus, the Baal Shem Tov. His initial activities focused on improving Jews' economic conditions—as is well known from many details passed down especially within the household of our Rebbeim: what he heard from his teacher, the Maggid; what he heard from the Baal Shem Tov; some is also recounted in the memoirs of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal (may his merit protect us), which have been printed. All these come from one shepherd*, as all shepherds and leaders of Israel who followed our Torah—the Torah of life—made this principle central to their actions: seeking the welfare of their community, environment, and country.
May it be G‑d's will that—as with every memorial book—the readers will reflect on the ways of Israel's great leaders and be inspired to act similarly according to their own ability, status, and situation within their surroundings and city.
With blessings that you may continue your activities to spread Judaism and its values with good health and abundance—including through describing the deeds of tzaddikim (righteous people) and great men so others may learn from them. As our Rebbe writes: "To cleave to those who know Hashem and His Torah," etc., with a double commandment so that one may learn from their deeds etc., and connect with them in every possible way (Shulchan Aruch Admor HaZaken Orach Chaim 156:4). With blessings for good news.
P.S.: Thank you for receiving Sefer Lechem Shamayim on Seder Zeraim-Moed. It is unfortunate that Yaavetz’s book list is incomplete; as hinted at in your introduction’s conclusion—it suffices to mention only a book’s name rather than its content etc.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that preserving accurate accounts of Jewish history and biographies inspires both young and old to emulate true Jewish leadership. Such works counter misinformation by highlighting authentic examples for future generations.
