במענה למכתבם מיום 2/9[1] בו שואלים למזלם.
והנה כבר נאמר תמים תהי' עם הוי' אלקיך[2], ואין ענין בדרישה למזל ולעתידות וכו', כי אם ללכת לבטח בדרך המלך מלכו של עולם, היא דרך תורתנו ומצותי', ז.
א.[3] - להתנהג בחיי היום יומיים בכל ענין ופרט מתאים לפי המבואר בשולחן ערוך וכיו"ב.
ואז הובטחנו אשר אין מזל לישראל[4], ומקיים בורא עולם ומנהיגו (על פי מה שכתוב): אם בחוקותי תלכו גו' ונתתי גשמיכם וגו'[5] ככל הברכות המנויות בפרשה.

- 1 כלומר: ע"פ סדר כתיבת התאריך באמריקה (חודש/יום) – 9 בפברואר 1959, הוא א' אדר ראשון תשי"ט.
- 2 [דברים יח, יג]: "תמים תהיה עם ה' אלהיך". ופירש"י: "התהלך עמו בתמימות, ותצפה לו. ולא תחקור אחר העתידות. אלא כל מה שיבוא עליך, קבל בתמימות. ואז תהיה עמו ולחלקו". ומזה לשון רבינו: "ואין ענין בדרישה למזל ולעתידות".
- 3 ז.א. – זאת אומרת.
- 4 [שבת קנו, א]: "רבי חנינא אומר מזל מחכים מזל מעשיר ויש מזל לישראל רבי יוחנן אמר אין מזל לישראל... שנאמר (ירמיהו י) כה אמר ה' אל דרך הגוים אל תלמדו ומאותות השמים אל תחתו כי יחתו הגוים מהמה הם יחתו ולא ישראל".
- 5 [ויקרא כו, ג-ד]: "אם בחקתי תלכו ואת מצותי תשמרו ועשיתם אתם. ונתתי גשמיכם בעתם ונתנה הארץ יבולה ועץ השדה יתן פריו", ומשם ממשיך הכתוב במנין הברכות.
- 6 כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א – כבוד קדושת אדוננו מורנו ורבנו שליט"א (שיחיה לאורך ימים טובים אמן). כלומר: המכתב נכתב ע"י המזכירות, בשם רבינו.

In reply to your letter of 2/9[1], in which you ask about your mazal.
It has already been said, "You shall be wholehearted with the L‑rd your G‑d"[2], and there is no point in seeking out mazal and the future, etc.; rather, one should walk securely on the way of the King, the King of the world, which is the way of our Torah and its mitzvos, that
is to say[3]: to conduct oneself in daily life, in every matter and detail, in accordance with what is set out in the Shulchan Aruch and the like.
Then we are assured that "Israel is not subject to mazal"[4], and the Creator and Ruler of the world fulfills (according to what is written): "If you walk in My statutes… I will give your rains…"[5], together with all the blessings enumerated in that portion.
With blessings for good news.

1. 2/9 (2/9): In the American order (month/day): 9 February 1959, which was 1 Adar I, 5719.
2. "You shall be wholehearted with the L‑rd your G‑d" (תמים תהי' עם הוי' אלקיך): Devarim 18:13. Rashi there: התהלך עמו בתמימות, ותצפה לו. ולא תחקור אחר העתידות. אלא כל מה שיבוא עליך, קבל בתמימות. ואז תהיה עמו ולחלקו, "Walk with Him wholeheartedly and look to Him, and do not inquire into the future; rather, whatever comes upon you, accept it wholeheartedly, and then you will be with Him and His portion." Hence the Rebbe's words, "there is no point in seeking out mazal and the future".
3. That is to say (ז.א.): ז.א. = זאת אומרת.
4. "Israel is not subject to mazal" (אין מזל לישראל): Shabbos 156a: רבי חנינא אומר מזל מחכים מזל מעשיר ויש מזל לישראל רבי יוחנן אמר אין מזל לישראל, "Rabbi Chanina says: mazal makes wise, mazal makes rich, and Israel is subject to mazal. Rabbi Yochanan says: Israel is not subject to mazal", as it is said (Yirmeyahu 10): "Thus says the L‑rd: Do not learn the way of the nations, and do not be dismayed by the signs of the heavens, for the nations are dismayed by them" — the nations are dismayed, not Israel.
5. "If you walk in My statutes… I will give your rains…" (אם בחוקותי תלכו גו' ונתתי גשמיכם וגו'): Vayikra 26:3–4: אם בחקתי תלכו ואת מצותי תשמרו ועשיתם אתם. ונתתי גשמיכם בעתם ונתנה הארץ יבולה ועץ השדה יתן פריו, "If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments and do them, I will give your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its produce, and the tree of the field shall give its fruit"; the verses that follow continue to list the blessings.
6. In the name of the Rebbe shlita (בשם כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א): כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א = "our holy master, teacher and Rebbe, may he live long and good days, amen". The letter was written by the secretariat in the Rebbe's name.
Summary
Answering correspondents who asked about their mazal, the Rebbe's secretariat writes that the Torah commands "You shall be wholehearted with the L‑rd your G‑d", without inquiring into the future: one should walk the King's way of Torah and mitzvos, conducting daily life by the Shulchan Aruch. Then "Israel is not subject to mazal", and G‑d fulfills the blessings of "If you walk in My statutes".
