Mr. Yitzchak, may he live.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive your letter and to see your interest in the songs of the Jewish people in general and especially in Chassidic and Chabad niggunim. You describe how in recent years these songs have become less prominent in the public programs of various choirs. It is clear that your reaction—that this is distressing—is justified. In both respects: something good is missing, and its place is sometimes taken by something trivial or even harmful.

In fact, specifically in Chabad Chassidus, special emphasis is placed on the importance of song and melody, as explained in many places; a significant portion is collected in the introduction to Sefer HaNiggunim published by Kehot, which you surely have.

Based on this, it is also clear that, in principle, your suggestion to arrange several Chabad niggunim so they can be used by choirs etc. seems very appropriate. However, considering what has happened in these areas during our confused times, there is great concern that such arrangements might alter their form and content—possibly to such an extent that any benefit would be outweighed by loss. Unfortunately, we have seen that in some areas where various matters from our holy Torah or from Chassidus have been arranged or adapted, these efforts have actually turned them into something harmful. Surely you do not need proof or examples of this since your letter shows you are closely involved with the younger generation.

In any case, my words are not at all a rejection of your proposal but rather a question and request for a specific plan or method that will eliminate the aforementioned concern.

Regarding what you wrote about suitable texts for songs—this further complicates matters because the text must fit the content of the song and the emotional state of those singing it; it cannot always be matched to a set text. In some places this idea is also explained (though from a different perspective): speech limits song—that is, song is more flexible and often includes several interpretations that no single text can encompass.

I am interested to hear about your work with youth in this area as well as whether there has been publicity regarding these matters.

With honor and blessing.
