Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 44th day of the Omer in which you write about the idea of making an anthology from the holy Zohar similar to the Ein Yaakov anthology regarding Shas, and you ask my opinion on this.
It is difficult for me to express an opinion on such a matter, since the Chabad Chassidus approach is that the Zohar and books of inner Torah in general should be studied as one studies the revealed part of Torah—especially in our times, when in the words of the Ari HaChai it is a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom. Even one who cannot for various reasons beyond his control study these matters in depth still benefits from simply reciting the words—this too is effective, just as with Nigleh of Torah. As is known from the Shelah's introduction (last section), even reciting just the names of the Five Books of Torah etc. has value—but it is obvious that one must strive as much as possible to spread this study. See also frightening statements about the great punishment for withholding this learning; from this we also understand the great reward, as explained in Rav Chaim Vital's introduction to Sha'ar HaHakdamot (based on Zohar and Midrashim), where it is clear that specifically learning with understanding and comprehension brings redemption. As stated by the Baal Shem Tov in his well-known Iggeres HaKodesh: when he was in the chamber of Mashiach, he was told: 'When your wellsprings spread outward.'
Nevertheless, since every aspect of spreading Torah is important, I do not want G‑d forbid to express an opinion even in another direction; therefore you should consult with Gedolei Yisrael Saba who are in Eretz HaKodesh Tavo U'Beracha and discuss this matter with them.
All of the above concerns others; but clearly regarding yourself—since you have become inspired about this matter—you should increase your fixed times for studying inner Torah as mentioned above with understanding and comprehension. This is also brought in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim at the end of Siman Nun (in Magen Avraham) regarding learning Torah Sheba'al Peh. It is also known from our master, Rabbi Schneur Zalman (the Baal HaTanya), who ruled both in Nistar (hidden) and Nigleh (revealed) Torah that there must be fixedness not only in time but also in soul—and that is most important. And that's sufficient.
Blessings for good news,
In the name of His Honor our Rebbe Shlita,
Secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that studying inner dimensions of Torah like Zohar should be done deeply and regularly; even recitation has merit but true understanding brings redemption. One should personally set fixed times for such study and encourage its spread among others.
