במענה על מכתבו מכ"ג חשון, בו כותב אודות הקישוים שפגע בהנוגע לעניני שידוכין, ואשר ראה בהרבה ספרים ומסכתות שצריך לחפש אחרי אשה משפחה רמה וכו' וגם כשרה וכו'.
והנה ידוע מאמר רז"ל דכל בנות ישראל נאות הן, ומובן שיופי האמיתי בדברי רז"ל הכוונה ליופי ברוחניות, וידוע גם כן מאמר רז"ל (יבמות סג, א) דחתן נחית דרגא נסיב איתתא, ואף שפשיטא שכל המעלות שמונה אותן במכתבו ראויות לחפש אחריהם, אבל מובן גם כן שאינו דומה חיפוש לחיפוש שצריך להעשות בעין יפה דוקא, ועל פי כתבו הנה עצתי שימסור ענין החיפוש להנהלת תומכי תמימים בו לומד, ופשיטא שבכלל תלמידה דבית רבקה נכון הוא ביותר, כיון שעצם המצאה במוסד זה מוכיח על ישרותה והיראת שמים, והרי באה לשם בהסכם הורי' שזהו גם כן הוכחה על היראת שמים של ההורים, ורואים במוחש אשר כשאין מדקדקין בענינים הטפלים ופשיטא שלא מדקדקים בענינים דטפל דטפל, כי אם דורשים ענינים דיראת שמים צניעות וכיו"ב, אזי מצליח השי"ת שביחד עם העיקר הנ"ל מוצאים גם כן את הטפל, ומובן ופשוט שאם בכל ענין צריך לעשות כל היכולת שבאדם להרבות בהסייעתא דשמיא, עאכו"כ בענין עיקרי כשידוך על זה נאמר ומה' אשה משכלת, והפעולות להרבות בהסייעתא דשמיא הוא ההוספה בעניני תורה ומצות, תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות וקיום המצות בהידור ולהשפיע על החברים בכגון דא.

In response to your letter from the 23rd of Cheshvan, in which you write about the difficulties you encountered regarding shidduchim, and that you have seen in many books and tractates that one should seek a woman from an elevated family, etc., and also one who is kosher, etc. It is known from our Sages that all daughters of Israel are beautiful, and it is understood that the true beauty referred to by our Sages means spiritual beauty. It is also known from our Sages (Yevamos 63a) that "a groom descends a level and marries a wife." Even though it is obvious that all the qualities you listed in your letter are worthy to seek after, it is also understood that not all searches are alike; the search must be done with a generous eye. Based on what you wrote, my advice is to entrust the matter of searching to the administration of Tomchei Temimim where you study. Certainly, in general, a student of Beis Rivkah is most appropriate, since her very presence in this institution proves her uprightness and fear of Heaven. She came there with her parents' agreement, which also demonstrates the parents' fear of Heaven. It is clearly seen that when one does not insist on secondary matters—and certainly not on matters that are secondary to secondary—but rather seeks qualities like fear of Heaven, modesty, and similar traits, then Hashem grants success so that along with these main qualities one also finds the secondary ones.
It is clear and obvious that if in every matter one must do everything possible to increase Heavenly assistance, how much more so regarding such an essential matter as shidduch—about which it is said: "From Hashem comes an understanding wife." The way to increase Heavenly assistance is by adding in Torah study (both revealed Torah and Chassidus), performing mitzvos with extra care, and influencing friends in these areas as well.
