בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מכ"א מנ"א בחוות דעת המומחה בהנוגע למצב בריאותו, ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב מהוספת הטבה בזה.
במה שכותב אשר מתכונן לעלות לאה"ק ת"ו, ובודאי למותר לעוררו אשר נסיעה כגון זו הנקראת בפי כל בשם עלי' ולארץ הנקראת בפי כל אפילו עמי הארץ בשם ארץ הקדושה, מצריכה הכנה, ז.א. עלי' רוחנית של האדם עוד קודם נסיעתו, והחלטה מתאימה בהנוגע להתנהגות שם, ואם לויזה של בשר ודם מוכרחים בשביל להכנס לאיזה מדינה (או עכ"פ להודעה שאין זקוקים לויזה), עאכו"כ שמוכרחת ויזה של בורא העולם ומנהיגו, הוא אשר הבטיח ארץ ישראל לבני אברהם יצחק ויעקב, ואם בהנוגע להנהגה בכלל הדברים אמורים עאכו"כ לאופן הנסיעה שצ"ל מתאימה לדיני והוראת תורתנו הק'.
באתי בשורות אלה, כיון שכותב בתוך הדברים שבדעתו להפליג לשם שביטוי זה רגיל בהנוגע לספינה, ולצערנו הכי גדול רבים טועים ונוסעים לשם באניות ישראליות הממשיכות נסיעתן גם ביום השבת קדש, ז.א. חילול שבת בפרהסיא באופן הכי מבהיל ובפרהסיא הכי גדולה גם לעיני כל עמי הארץ, ומבלי הבדל איך שתהי' הנהגת איש פרטי בחייו הפרטים, הרי אין זה דומה לאני' הדוגלת בשם כלל ישראל, והנוסעים בה אומרים בלבם אשר בזה מבטאים חבתם לכלל ישראל וגם לארץ ישראל! והרי אי אפשר לקטיגור הכי גדול שיעשה סניגור! וכידוע מאמרי רז"ל וחז"ל ששקולה שבת כנגד כל המצות.
אשמח להוודע שטעיתי בפירוש דבריו "להפליג", וגם אז תקותי ששורותי האמורות אינן לריק, כי מוכרחת ההסברה בענין זה, כי הרי - ע"פ דעת תורה - כל הנוסע באני' זו בשבת, מוסיף בחורבן הארץ ובחורבן כלל ישראל ר"ל, וכיון שרבו הטועים בזה מחסרון ידיעה, המודיע אותם אמיתת הדברים מצילם מפעולה הכי מבהילה זו ומעמידם על האמת, והתועלת היא לכלל ישראל ולארצנו הק', ומוסגר בזה העתקה ממה שכתבתי לשואלי בכגון דא, בכדי שלא להכפיל הדברים.
שמעתי מקשים, אם הדבר מבהיל עד כדי כך, מפני מה הרבנים אין יוצאים במחאה ובקול גדול וכו' מתאים לחומר הענין, אבל פשיטא שאין קושיא זו משנה את הענין, ובפרט שכמה תופעות כגון דא ישנן ואין מזעיקין עליהן כלל...

I was pleased to receive your letter from the 21st of Menachem Av with the expert's opinion regarding your health situation, and may it be G‑d's will that you share good news about further improvement in this regard.
Regarding what you write about preparing to make aliyah to Eretz HaKodesh, it is certainly unnecessary to remind you that such a journey—called by everyone "aliyah," and to a land called even by simple people "the Holy Land"—requires preparation; that is, a spiritual elevation of the person even before his trip, and an appropriate resolution regarding one's conduct there. If for a visa from flesh and blood one must have permission to enter a country (or at least notification that no visa is needed), how much more so is a visa from the Creator and Ruler of the world required—He who promised Eretz Yisrael to the children of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov. And if this applies regarding conduct in general, how much more so regarding the manner of travel itself, which must conform to the laws and guidance of our holy Torah.
I write these lines because you mention in passing your intention "to sail there," an expression usually referring to traveling by ship. Unfortunately, many mistakenly travel on Israeli ships that continue their journey even on Shabbat Kodesh. This means public desecration of Shabbat in the most shocking way and before all nations. Regardless of how an individual behaves in his private life, this cannot be compared to a ship representing Klal Yisrael; those traveling on it feel they are expressing their love for Klal Yisrael and for Eretz Yisrael! But it is impossible for the greatest accuser to become a defender! As is well known from our Sages' teachings: Shabbat is equal to all mitzvos.
I would be happy to learn that I misunderstood your use of "to sail," but even then I hope my words are not in vain because this matter requires explanation. According to Torah law, anyone traveling on such a ship on Shabbat increases the destruction of the Land and Klal Yisrael (G‑d forbid). Since many err out of ignorance, informing them of the truth saves them from this most frightening act and sets them on the right path; this benefits all Jews and our holy land. I am enclosing here a copy of what I wrote to others who asked about this so as not to repeat myself.
I have heard people ask: If this matter is so serious, why don't rabbis protest loudly according to its gravity? But obviously such questions do not change the reality—especially since there are several similar phenomena about which no outcry is raised at all...
