I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 26th of Sivan, and surely by now you have already received my response to your previous letters...

Regarding what you wrote about notes on student papers—it seems you do not realize that this requires detachment from other matters and focusing on this issue; and after organizing the notes—detachment from this matter and returning to regular affairs. From your letter it appears that you think if a note is just a line, it only requires the time to read a line and at most a moment before and after.

If there was a regular system where such matters required my comments, then certainly there would be time set aside for it. But I hope I do not need to elaborate for you that this is the role of the yeshivah’s hanhala where the students study.

On the contrary—even if it were necessary for me to consider and comment on several details, even then the note should come in the name of or through the hanhala to the student, since this is the established order in educational institutions.

Especially since there is doubt about this matter—and particularly when dealing with students who are chassidic by nature but due to human inclination require extra or specific effort. It is understood that none of this means I will never write notes, etc.; rather, I wish to emphasize—even though it is obvious—that this is not the educational approach even in Tomchei Temimim yeshivos. I have never heard that such was ever the system in previous years.

If there will be an opportune time and necessity for this matter—there will yet be time for it...

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that feedback on student work should come from yeshivah leadership as part of proper educational structure; direct involvement by him is not standard practice except in rare cases of necessity.
