בנסוע המשכן מי מהלווים נשא את הכיור וכנו?
מענה: לא נזכר שהיו לכיור וכנו בדים ובלי בדים א"א לשאת אותם בכתף, כ"א בעגלה - וכן כתב בס' חזקוני (שמות ל, י"ח) בברייתא דמלאכת המשכן פי"ג כתוב: משפחות הגרשוני היו ממונים על כל כלי במשכן, (לבד אלו שנשאו בני-קהת שזכרם בברייתא לפני זה). בני מררי היו ממנוים על הקרשים וכו' מזה משמע אשר בני גרשון נשאו הכיור וכנו.
מפני מה לא הודיע בפירוש בכתוב מי נשא אותם?
מענה: מפני שכלים אלו לא היה תכליתם בשביל עצמם, כ"א בשביל להכשיר את הכהנים לעבודה. (כמו שמטעם זה לא בא ציווי הקב"ה לעשות אותם בעת שציווה לעשות את שאר הכלים ראה שם בחזקוני).

In response to your letter with questions on the subject you are studying, it is surprising that you do not inform me of your study schedule, and most importantly whether you are learning with diligence and consistency and conducting yourself as a Jewish Avrech should in Torah study and consistent mitzvah observance in general, as well as honoring parents and teachers, etc. Certainly you will write about this in your next letter.

When traveling with the Mishkan (Tabernacle), which of the Leviim carried the washbasin and its stand?
Answer: It is not mentioned that the washbasin and its stand had poles, and without poles it was impossible to carry them on the shoulder—only by wagon. So writes Sefer Chizkuni (Shemot 30:18). In the Baraita of Melachot HaMishkan chapter 13 it is written: The families of Gershoni were appointed over all vessels of the Mishkan (except those carried by Bnei Kehat mentioned earlier in the Baraita). Bnei Merari were appointed over the boards, etc. From this it appears that Bnei Gershon carried the washbasin and its stand.
Why does Scripture not explicitly state who carried them?
Answer: Because these vessels were not for their own sake but rather to prepare the Kohanim for service. (For this reason as well there was no command from Hashem to make them at the time He commanded making other vessels—see there in Chizkuni.)
Summary
The Rebbe's secretary clarifies that Bnei Gershon carried the washbasin and its stand because they lacked poles for shoulder carrying; instead they were transported by wagon. This detail is omitted from Scripture since these items served only to prepare Kohanim for their service.
