מאשר הנני קבלת מכתביו מי"ב וי"ז טבת, בו כותב אודות הקישוים השונים שבהעבודה ובפרט בענין הבית רבקה, ובודאי כשיזכור על הקישוים שהיו במדינתו לפנים אשר בכ"ז התגברו עליהם ובהצלחה, שהרי נתקיים בהם כלשון הכתוב בפרשת השבוע בנערנו ובזקננו בבנינו ובבנותינו גו' במה נחשב הקישוים דעתה ואף שלפעמים הנסיון בקו העושר והמרחב גדול יותר מאשר בקו ההפכי, הנה ההתבוננות הנ"ל מוסיפה אומץ להתגבר על הקישוים מתוך שמחה ובטחון חזק לנצחון בכל הפרטים.
בטח בינתים קבל מכתבי מענה על מכתביו הקודמים.
מ"ש אודות... יש להביא בחשבון שזה שתעבוד בכרם חב"ד יש בזה לא רק הענין דועשה טוב אלא גם שלילה שלא תעבוד באופן דהתחרות (קאנקורענץ) והרי כמה צורות ואופנים בהתחרות, ואף שמובן שאי אפשר לוותר על ענינים עיקרים הרי לכל דבר יש לתת צורה דיפלומטית, זאת אומרת בתוקף הדרוש, אלא שבדברי נועם... אלא שבכ"ז אין כדאי למתוח הנים (אנציהען די סטרונע) ואדרבה להוסיף בהצורה שתהי' נעימה ולא לוותר על הפנימית והענינים שיש להם חשיבות, והשי"ת יצליחו לבשר טוב בענינים הכללים ובעניניו הפרטים.

I acknowledge receipt of your letters from the 12th and 17th of Teves, in which you write about various difficulties in your work, especially regarding Beis Rivka. Surely you will recall the challenges that existed in your previous country, which were nevertheless overcome successfully. As it says in this week's Torah portion: 'Bin'areinu u'vizkeineinu b'vaneinu u'vivnoteinu...' (With our youth and our elders, with our sons and our daughters...), so what are today's difficulties compared to those? Even though sometimes the test that comes with abundance and comfort is greater than one of the opposite nature, reflecting on the above adds strength to overcome obstacles with joy and strong confidence for success in every detail.
Surely by now you have received my letter responding to your previous correspondence.
Regarding what you wrote about... one must take into account that working in the Chabad vineyard is not only a matter of 'do good,' but also negates working in a manner of competition (konkurrenz). There are many forms and ways competition can manifest. Although it is understood that one cannot forgo essential matters, everything should be given a diplomatic form—that is, with necessary firmness but spoken pleasantly.
Nevertheless, it is not worthwhile to stretch the string (anziehen die strune), but rather to increase pleasantness without giving up on internal matters and those of importance. May Hashem grant you success to share good news regarding both general matters and your personal affairs.
