Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter, in which you comment on the question (printed in HaTamin booklet 5, p. 78 sec. 2) in Tanya chapter 8, regarding how with forbidden foods, when one later prays or studies Torah with the energy from that food, how is it possible that the vitality within it does not ascend to holiness. Furthermore, there is an additional stringency based on what is explained at the beginning of chapter 37—that it is impossible for the G‑dly soul to articulate words with the lips, etc.

However, the explanation is simple: this elevation is itself a novelty (see Kesser Shem Tov III, 14), since the external logic would suggest the opposite—what connection does the physicality of food have to the holiness of Torah and prayer, which are entirely spiritual? Moreover, even regarding the animal soul there is room for this wonder; for example, when a hand writes words of intellect there is no visible refinement as a result—regardless if one writes nonsense or wisdom or something else. As our Rebbe said: "Wisdom cannot be touched by hands." Only through refining matter—even physicality—does it become elevated so that it has some connection to spirituality. For example: specifically brain matter can undergo change through engagement in intellectual matters (as explained in some discourses), unlike nonsense; and it becomes elevated through this engagement. From this we understand that even when matter and substance have already been elevated, if afterwards they fall from their level they return to their previous state. This concept is understood from the reason and explanation that mitzvos in physicality are only possible after the world and its materiality were refined as a whole through the Egyptian exile (see Torah Or Yisro parsha 74a and elsewhere), and this suffices for understanding.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that elevating physicality—including energy from forbidden foods—to holiness is an extraordinary process achieved through refinement. Even after elevation, one must maintain their level lest they revert; true spiritual connection requires ongoing effort and transformation.
