Publicity, Actions, and the Challenge of Ego

ב"ה, ימי הסליחות, ה'תשט"ז ברוקלין, נ.י.
The Rebbe addresses concerns that publicity and communal actions may foster feelings of ego. He cites a saying from the Mitteler Rebbe emphasizing that while one may become like an onion, one must still review Chassidus. The letter notes that sometimes ego exists even without action.

... Regarding what you wrote that activities and publicity and the like can (and perhaps already do) cause a feeling of ego and similar issues — it is known the saying of the Mitteler Rebbe: "An onion may come from you, but you must review Chassidus." Especially since, unfortunately, for some — the feeling of ego is present, but there are no actions. And we conclude with good.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that while communal activity and publicity may risk fostering ego, one must continue learning Chassidus regardless. It is better to act even if there is some ego than to have ego without positive deeds.
